More fun with MDL -- AO or edge or neighbors?

Looking specifically for a way to detect how angled or recessed an area of an object is.
If there was something like Ambient Occlusion, I could use it... but I'm unaware of any such brick in MDL.
If I could read in a patch of a geometry, like say feed in the normal of the neighboring polygons and calculate how much they vary from one another, that would give me a primitive surface detection. But... I can't see a way to actually do that.
Anyone have any ideas?
