just installed DS and nothing loads

No matter what I try to load I get an error saying the .duf file does not exist. How do I fix this?

That usually means your content directories are not properly configured.

How did you install your content?

In more detail,  ideally, you have used DIM to install your content which consists of a folder including content, data, runtime etc... Daz Studio (DS) has no way to know where the content is without you telling it; in the Preferences for DS, there is a Content Tab with the Content Directory Manager... you tell the DS portion to use your content folder i.e. the one that contains the data, shaders, people etc.. folder,  the Poser portion to use the runtimes i.e...geometry, character, textures folders, and then Daz Studio will know the path to the .duf files.  One very important rule is no nested content folders...I would avoid manual install until you understand the anatomy of the content folder.
Here is a view of my rather untidy directories for example.

I used DIM to install. Okay, maybe I'm looking too hard or over thinking things but I don't see where I need to be looking. What directories should I create? and where does DS put these folders that need to be mapped? What I see in my windows folders is already there in the cms.

  • If you used the defaults in DIM you need to add C:\Users\Public\Documents\My Daz 3D Library to the lists under Daz Studio Formats and Poser Formats. You can do that manually or you can download and run Rob's scriptt o sync DS with DIM: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config_import/start

I also notice that you didn't quite drill down far enough in some of your categories; your Daz Studio libraries have runtimes too that should be added to the Poser section.

NO NO NO!!!  Only add the folders that holds the "Runtime" and/or "data" folders, those are the libraries.

Don't worry, it's pretty easy to make this a complete chaos... I did it a few times (lessons learned the hard way), but fortunately, it is simple to solve.

The DAZ Connect Library cannot be sorted under DAZ Formats; it has to be under Connect only, because it has a very different folder sub structure, and if you add it to DAZ Formats you'll get lots of folders starting with IM... and even more error messages, because Studio will interpret Connect structure the wrong way in DAZ Format.

Posergenesis and Public/Documents/MyDAZ3DLibray also need to be added to Poser Formats.

Once you made those changes, close Studio, and restart it. It might need a moment to sort itself out, but then it should work (I hope! wink)
