Even with tutorials....

Even with online youtube tutorials. This thing seems confusing. Having trouble understanding how to organize and select.

Some tutorials clearly are using different versions of Daz than I am.

I am using 4.9.

It seems other than the basics, most of this is trial and error. Is this true?

Not really... as I don't use Smart Content, as is confusing and annoying. I use the Content Directories tab instead, and I have made my own categories, that follow my own rules, so finding things is a piece of cake. For example, for older content, I moved the item, the materials and poses for a specific product into its own sub-category. The sub categories I then organized by topic, for examle "Environment", "Vehicles", etc.

I assume that with video tutorials, you are referring to http://www.daz3d.com/help/help-daz-3d-video-tutorials?

In regards to organizing, you might find this thread over in the New User section useful: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/146641/dracorn-s-tips-n-stuff-for-newbies-and-the-curious#latest

Perhaps, if you give an example of what troubles you in particular, a more detailed help is possible.

Maybe not — pretty much everything in DAZ|Studio can be customised, and there are several different base layout settings for beginners, learners and experts. Go to the Window menu at the top and select Window>Workspace>Select Layout to try out the different options. The tutorial creator might simply be using a different layout setting. The general layout of D|S hasn't really changed much for several years.
