shadow softness and point lights

Is there a way to create soft shadows when using point lights, or is that simply not possible?  Or was there some third party point light that does it?

Iray or 3Delight?  With Iray what you get is pretty much what happens in real-life so shadows will be sof(er) if light passes through a 'diffuser' or light (think of the pale shadows of sunlight thropugh a cloud layer), etc.  If in 3Delight there should be a shadow softness dial available on the light.

3DL.  I don't see any shadow softness parameter for pointlights, only for spotlights.  (I'm using 4.8 if it matters.)

Some light properties are hidden when 3Delight is selected as renderer. You see them when you 'Show Hidden Properties', although I'm assuming they are hidden because they don't do anything? In Iray you would set the light geometry to say Rectangle and increase height and width to get softer shadows, just like real light the bigger the softer.

    That's right.
