Make up and Nail polish

Arrggghhhhh. Made my first 'painted' character and have always used the presets that come with the "So-and-so for Victoria X' figures.

I've always assumed that if I grab the Material for one figure and use it with the next, I could have shape issues...

Using FaceGen by the way and wanting to apply make up and nail polish to some originally crafted persons.

Did a search for nail polish and only had 1 hit. but it looks like the ultimate result. lol

That looks like a definite must have.

http://www.daz3d.com/l-i-e-make-up-set-for-genesis-3-female-s

Looking for a one-click solution to add make up (light foundation, lipstick and eye-liner) and also paint the nails.

These look like a one-two punch.(HOPING THEY GO ON SALE [and the headwrap, I remeber bookmarking])

Anyone agree?

Better ideas?

Try this one http://www.daz3d.com/instant-makeup-for-genesis-3-female - its a script, you can pretty much make your own make up every time. Easy to use, fun, and lots of options.  You can use any colors you want, and it has settings for eyeliner, eye make up, blush, and lips.  It doesn't do nails but there might be a script out for nails as well.  Also, there are a bunch of nail shaders out there including free ones.

You should definitely take a look at Laurie's whole page.  She has some beautiful free shaders and stuff that she has been kind enough to share for free. I use her shaders all the time.

You can also be creative with nails and try car paint and other shiny shaders. You can use the white car paint shader that comes with DS and add colors to it. Lune nails is also good.

Oh see, you guys got me to the next level.

Digging in to Shaders! Thanks all.

You can use LIE makeup that comes with other characters as well. Sometimes it's a whole new face texture though. Not that there's anything wrong with using a skin just for the makeup....

I've been playing around with some ideas for nails myself.  There isn't really all that much in the store.  However, you do know you can use shaders on nails, yes?  In a pinch, car paint shaders work really well for fingernails.  So do some of the ceramic shaders and other glossy type shaders in various products.  Take a look at what shaders you have that are really glossy and you might find some in your product library that you can use.

So no one does foundation? Face powder. Like "a night out" type makeup. Or should I be doing that with material? Like, I guess the ultimate make up would be changing the skin. lol.

I'm not really looking for rosy cheeks, but I guess you're right, stuff for the eyes and lips would be the most noticable.

A lot of the older figures had makeup where the whole face changed which I happened to find very irritating.  When I wanted to change just the eye makeup or just the lips that wasn't an option.  Things have slowly changed so the most of the makeup now is separated by eyes and lips and doesn't affect the base color of the skin on the face which is they way I like it and hope it stays that way.  I think the change might have been due to the number of complaints about why makeup was done this way but I'm not sure about that.

I think if you want a foundation layer you'll have to do that yourself as I don't recall seeing any products which do just the foundation and blush with the exception of the one script that was mentioned that I think also did blush.  It's been awhile since I've used it as I haven't been rendering that many girls where I needed to use custom makeup recently.

Okay. Thanks for the heads up.

I think 'foundation' comes under the heading of 'all these girls were born in Photoshop'. Since that's basically what foundation's purpose is....

You know, it's me trying to undo the skin textures from facegen. So...the skins have the little detail of marks and imperfections. I guess I COULD do it in photoshop and smooth out the skin and paint whatever I want on the face....hmmmm..that's gives me an idea about experimenting.

The face looks great, but she's supposed to be a sort of mobb bosse's girl. She would be loaded up with over-done makeup. Not 50s' garrish but definately a "doll".

    I'm probably obsessing over nothing.

One of the more interesting things I've learned about makeup from working with Daz Studio is how bad makeup interferes with subsurface scattering (SSS) which is one way (as far as I can tell) we can identify bad, overdone makeup. I.... don't really know how this can help you. But I thought it was interesting! I've noticed that sometimes skin tints of unnatural colors look, well, like body paint from old scifi. While othertimes, it looks much more believable. I THINK that's the SSS at work.

Sorry to necro this page. Out of curiosity, how do you use car paint as nail polish? If you don't mind me asking.

You use the select surface tool and select the nails then add a car paint shader or any other shader to them

  • Well said FSMCDesigns. It's funny to look back - at only a few years ago, and see how many products didn't exist .....

    There weren't....ripped fabric shaders...lighting probes to cast light....people billboards....dForce.....Water Simulation.......etc

And so many "How do I do this?" is now answered with a link to a product....

Its definitely fun to play around with in Iray. I usually can't be bothered to go into the shader folder & since I usually change stuff anyway, I just switch the surface from PBR Metallic to Weighted. Diffuse Weight I set around 0.90 to 1.00, Glossy Weight around 0.40 to 0.70 depending on the strength I want, Glossy Roughness to 0.40 to 0.60, Top Coat Weight 0.3 to 0.7 with Scatter Only & Fresnel effect with the roughness set really low 0.01 to 0.15.

For the Metallic Flakes, you don't want the flakes to be too small/big and/or have too much density. You also want to keep their roughness value well above the Top Coat Roughness(or Dual Lobe Specular Roughnesses 1 & 2 if using that instead of Top Coat for the sharp glossy highlight) & slightly lower or slightly above Glossy Roughness settings depending on how far across the surface in relation to the Glossy Layer you want the flakes to appear.
