    Wow that was way over my head lol.  I read it anyway and will come back to it when I get to the point that I need to understand it.

    My understanding so far of the way Blender Cycles does materials/textures is that it wants to be designed so that you're only putting in the things that you specifically want, rather than having a big list of fields you don't care about. The older renderer does have those lists though, and in both cases they feel way more complicated than they really need to be, in terms of practicity/design.

    Fortunately if you don't want to deal with it yet it's still very easy to model in Blender, set material zones, and then export to DS or whatever and add materials and render there.

    Interesting enough that series of video by Jacob that's on the first page, goes into a fair bit of adding materials.  Not so much textures yet but the basic idea was very easy to understand. ( I'm going through the videos a second time just because he is so easy to follow).  Even UV mapping is explained very well for a beginner like me to understand. And you are right you can set up exactly what you want and nothing else.  Of course, its going to take a LOT of experimenting on my part to figure out what each block does.  I never understood the bricks in Studio or any other program until I watched this set of videos.  It finally kind of clicked lol. Just the very basics of put this with this and see what happens.

    I have been sidetracked lately fixing stuff on the farm. :) Sounds like you are progressing in learning Blender Sonja. I know i have just been reading and trying to keep up with posting links in the 2nd post. I might get a chance to do some stuff in the next few days the temps are suppose to drop with possible rain.

    I have been having fun anyway lol.  And I was right it did make working in Carrara's modelling room a bit easier as well.  I highly recommend this series of videos for anyone who isn't familiar with Blender at all. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrgQj91MOVfjTShOMRY8TLmkJ7OFr7bj6 Jacob Lewis utube channel is a beginner series using Blender 2.73  (link is also on the front page).  Very much a step by step and slow enough to follow along.  He has it set so that all of his mouse clicks show which ended up being a huge help with figuring out the shortcut keys etc.  Won't have much time this month probably to play with much of anything, going to be extra busy.

    It's a quiet thread here. :) Extra busy has been the truth here for me. I have not gotten done near what I would have liked on the farm too many breaks downs. frown

     

    On a different note I hope to also get back into the swing of modeling in Blender again. I hope I have not forgotten what I have learned.

    So, I was wondering if anyone bought this tutorial and what did they think? https://www.daz3d.com/easy-modeling-and-morphing-with-blender

    I have been looking at SIckleyield's tutorial  https://www.daz3d.com/daz-studio-content-creation-with-blender also.  Any thoughts on that?

    It came up in another thread on modeling tools and I think it might help me transition to Blender.  Anyone have experience with it?  The user interface appears less intimidating.

    @Liana   I haven't been in Blender much lately.  I have a couple of unfinished hair projects that I really need to work on, but it's been a while.  Like you, I hope I remember everything I've learned.  As for the tutorials, I have both on my wishlist.  I'll have to wait to pick them up, though.

    I have not heard of this one. I bookmarked it and will look at it later this evening. It's gets dark sooner now.

  • I don't have them either and I certainly did not get any modelling done in either Blender or Carrara.  I'm hoping the same, that I haven't forgotten what little I had managed to learn!

    I am kind of on hold getting stuff too many repairs going on here, so it looks like I won't be getting any of those tutorials soon to check them out. I welcome anyone to share their thoughts here on how helpful they are for them.

    I need to crack open Carrara one day. I do really like the looks of the landscape products that are out there for it maybe between the two I could get some neat models made. :)

  • I will say that as I started to learn one modelling program, what I have learned in one, does make it easier to work in the others.

    I got the tutorials for Blender and hexagon with these crazy PC+ and Black Friday sales, plus some sales at Rendo. Once I go through them. I will share what I learned and any additional stuff possibly not covered in all the free resources we have listed already at the beginning of this thread. I have spent way too much at once, but the prices were right and now I have most of the winter to plug away at stuff.

    My plan is to get back to modeling again here soon. This year winter has been pretty mild and virtually no snow or it does not stay. I am still working outside on things when it is warm enough.

    I also picked up some tutorials for texturing hoping to glean some more tips and tricks I don't already know. I have been wanting to do more cloth type textures from scratch using both Gimp and photoshop. I have done some, but want to expand my skills a bit. I seen Esha has a huge spendy tutorial on texturing that teaches using iray just not 3delight shaders.

    Hi guys..this is useful thread and thanks for the links. Just back to 3d stuff after more than 5 years doing some 2d and marketing works.

    FIRST of all as (former?) another 3D program user I find very hard to adapt my rusty "3d" muscle memories to blender. Reinstall several times and end with abandoned it,  because UI makes no sense for me.

    But I'm really want to use Freestyle which (for right now)  only work with Blender

    Its basically Blender with less overhelming UI and cleverly added icon to represent all tools or stuff in blenders instead just using text. And the control  behaviours more natural for me ( and maybe for you if you came from another 3d packages)

    Last Time I've checked its work flawlessly with a lot populer addon including mjcTeleblender.

    Although I'm not yet mastering about Blender but I'm happy for having another renderer option than what I've got just from Daz Studio only,  especially with toon render and line which tremendous excelent via freestyle

    Thanks for sharing. I took a look at the video and I think it would be a good option for those who have difficulty with the UI. I do know video tutorials between older and newer versions for blender can be a bit confusing because Blender has changed a bit from versions like 2.49 ( I hated the older versions) to 2.78, so not sure how it will work to use and follow blender tutorials that use the usual Blender UI. :)

    One thing I`ve forgot to mention was I`ve installed both software . Original Blender and BforArtist forked version

    So I can learn and make transition without direct contact wih ancient/alien UI first and slowly  transfer my understanding about what good thing Blender`s offer or how to do everything later   :)

    How to do basic modelling or editing ? how their material node setup .? And most important for me is how good toon render and freestyle build ? Because that`s why I need to have interaction with blender in first place 

    And since I`m also installing Official Blender package, I`ve learned how to do same thing in there . But for now I stick to something I`m comfortable first 

    Maybe this not for everyone , but my approach mostly about understanding "what is this and how this one will help me" , And since a lot  3d techique mostly the same ( whatever 3d packages you came from) so I just need to "eliminate" something which makes me trouble to get in there .

    And in this case is Blender`s UI . So if there is solution ( even small) chance to elliminate those experience I`ll take it LOL
