Timeline and aniMate

I have my character walking forward using animate. Now I want the character to stop and look around then start walking  forward again using animate.

The walking forward is ok, but when I try to make the character look around (using the timeline) it won't work, the character just looks straight ahead.

Can the Timeline and animate be used together?
