What human figure do you tend to use the most and why?

I was wondering what most people here tend to use.  In my case, I often use what I have outfits for a particular scene that works best.  But that also can depend on what morphs I have or skins I am using as well.  But I don't tend to reject say V4/M4 because "ugh that is so old" like some people seem to do.  I have used all the figures (except Genesis 3) and I don't see 'that' much difference.  A few things here and there yes, but I haven't run into a situation where V4 couldn't do what I wanted so I went with Genesis 1 or 2.  Especially with some of the amazing addons for V4/M4.

I tend to find, in the end the viewer is not going to be able to tell what figure was used.  But hey, if you think otherwise by all means post why.

When I use a Daz human, it is generally a genesis 2 character.  The improvements in joint bends are very good.  There are products to improve the V4/M4 joint bends so it is not really that important.  On occasion, I will use genesis, or V4/M4, or V3/M3, or the Poser 7 figures (Simon and Sydney, also called G2 which is confusing).  The decision is only very rarely affected by which figure a clothing content was made.  Between Poser's wardrobe wizard, Studio's transfer utility, and the VWD dynamic cloth plugin, most clothing packs can be converted for use with most other figures.

Agreed, the converting of clothes often work well (at least with Studio I haven't done it in Poser or VWD dynamic cloth plugin (don't have it).  But it depends, sometimes the conversion more trouble than it is worth and doesn't turn out like you hoped.  As I said, in my case it isn't straightforward.  I might need this character with those clothes for that scene.  And if the clothes are Genesis 2 and the character is V4 (especially high heels) it can get interesting to convert the clothes.  Sometimes it is easier to move/convert the character.

Personally, for the style of my work, I use generations 3 & 4 and some Poser figures.
My preference goes for generation 3 because there is less of useless parameters in Carrara and one can find textures of very high quality.
Me also I do not see a difference with Genesis, if it is for the joints, like said Diomède, my characters are almost always dressed…
The extreme morphing? Carrara can do very well this work with the old generations.
    I'm not ready to change!

Agreed.  Curious to hear what other people have to say.

Here is a demonstration of my use of content for David 3, Victoria 3, Victoria 4, and morphs for genesis, on genesis 2 figures in Carrara.

Dudu and Headwax posted while I was typing, which is why my "curious to hear what other people have to say" occurs after their posts..  I was not rudely excluding Dudu or Headwax from the group of people I am curious about..

Mostly I use Genesis 2 and Genesis. It depends what the scene is, what outfits I require and what poses. Usually it's this context that defines what I use based on what's in my library. I do have some Genesis 3, but until very recently that's been reserved for DS renders. I have got some M4/V4 generation stuff, but I can never find my way around the runtimes well enough to figure if I've go what I want. (the runtime structures defy logic to my brain!)

Yes I am with you there regarding Runtime organization.  But I use DAZ studio categories and that shows up well in Carrara under the smart content part of the browser.  It really helps mak sense of the otherwise mess that is a normal Runtime.  There are other tools, but I never got around to trying them out, PZDB for example.

Always using the latest and the greatest. So these days, it's Genesis 3 and my favorites are Eva 7 and Lilith 7 : )

I'm heavily invested in V4, M4 and K4, with all the add-ons - hair, clothes, morphs, characters, etc.  The cast for a short animation is in progress, image attached.

Agreed. I use not only Genesis 3 but also Genesis 2 figures. But as for me, the difference is that I always prefer my own characters which morphs were made in Blender or Hexagon. Any other characters or forms exist in my library for secondary roles. As for M4 and V4, I get sick every time that I see all those painful joints and cut armpits.

This is an example of a couple of my custom characters made on G2 figures base.

Steve, nice work.  One thing the youtube link wouldn't let me click or link, I had to copy via typing (but nice when I got there).

Vyusur, I agree V4 has those problems but there are a lot of fixes for them that auto apply as you pose.  One pack I know of is on Daz, another is on the other major site that we apparently can't talk about here. ;)  And great work work there.  I have done a few custom morphs via Hexagon or Carrara but not many.  Still learning that. :)  I rarely use characters "out of the box".  I always end up moding them in some form or other.  Either size adjustments, adding other morphs, or another skin that I like better ( a few I customized).

Human figures are not usually the main focus of my images so I tend to make a lot of use of Predatron's various LoRez characters, especially Loretta and Lorenzo Lorez.  When I need a human character front and center it's Genesis 2 about 80% of the time, Genesis 1 about 10-15% of the time and Victoria 4/Michael 4 the rest of the time. I do occasionally use Genesis 3 if I am rendering in Blender rather than Carrara, but that makes up a pretty small portion of my renders.

No problem.  I see in my profile that I have a signature (forgot that), but I don't see it in the post.  I'm confused, but I'm getting used to it.  cheeky

I used to use V4 a lot, though more recently I have been using G2F quite a bit. Most of the characters in "Trick or Treat" were actually Genesis characters, they simply had the toon character morphs that I needed, although otherwise Genesis seems to be a bit of a "skipped" generation for me. But with Misty's developments, G3 figures might well start to make a more regular appearance.

Definitely... I am getting great results with my G3 figures now thanks to MistyRara's characters she's created. Once I had my G3 morphs and expressions loaded, the possibilities are endless. Am converting all my Genesis and G2's over.

Yes, if you want to use G3 clothing in Carrara you have to export it from DS in a blended weight, but if that is all I have to do, I am one happy camper. You can then just save the clothing items to yourCarrara browser.

I am also working with M4/V4 and Gen 1 Gen2 clothing saved to my Carrara browser previously on my G3 figures. I have had to re-building clothing to suit my prehistoric themes, so I was 'cross-dressing' between generations and genders already. Here is my first effort of G3 male, made to look younger and wearing M4 vest and kilt.

@PhilW, Why did you skip Genesis 1 and 2, yet now really like Genesis 3?  I have played around a bit with Genesis 3 in Studio, but I didn't see anything at the time that warneted further investment (WOW they can do THIS?  I need to get them!).

@SileneUK, Basically the same question, why do you think it is worth converting all your characters to Genesis 3.  What does it bring to the game that you didn't have before?  As for Genesis 3 clothing, are you converting them in Studio or something else?

Sweet thread! I have to remember to come bck to this when I can!

Just some additions to some comments I've made in this endeavor before: whereas I've been sticking with V4 and M4 for the most part because of comfort level (I've a LOT of time and support content invested in them) as well as speed - my new Genesis 2 versions of characters not only take a lot longer (it seems) to load and save, but also have some quirks, like loosing some abilties if a saved CAR file of the figure is brought into an existing scene, for example.

Well I've recently picked up more Genesis 1 content for use as my background people, monsters and creatures, etc., and have been finding that Genesis 1 loads and saves and works very well in Carrara.

Gotta go... but I'll be back

I feel the same way.  Also, due to some nice deep discounts on add-ons, I've been experimenting a little with Apollo Maximus.  I was worried at first that the Carrara clips, based on M4/V4 AniMate and Poser mocap imports, would not work, but it seems they do, mostly.

Right Since I was turned on to using the graph editor, I've found that editing M4/V4 animations to work with other figures is often quite simple. Sometimes there are some real buggers that are just plain hard to fix, though... but for the most part - I still try.

For example, it might seem like the feet are the only things that need fixing when using a V4 or M4 animation on Genesis 1, but it's not just a single axis (x), we still need to make subtle tweaks to y and somtimes z as well - just to get them better. Predatron's LoRez folks as well.

Just the other day, I was going to try some of my new Genesis stuff. I was amazed at how quickly Genesis 1 loaded in. Also, once a single Genesis 1 figure is loaded in, then subsequent Genesis 1 figures load in ever faster!

They also saved very quickly to my browser. Now it will be interesting to see how easily they work when being dragged into premade (and saved in Carrara) scenes. I recall using Genesis a LOT a while back as Orcs and other creatures, and I've always just dragged them into a scene from my browser, so I think they work great.

  • DartanbeckDartanbeck Posts: 21,551

Also, for the budget-minded, there are a LOT of very low-priced, yet awesome support products for Genesis 1 - but the same is also true for 2 and 3 now too.

I'll be trying all of them, since I have products for them. I don't have anything but the base figures for Genesis 3, so 2 is as far as I go for now. But with Misty doing her thing... who knows?

  • SileneUKSileneUK Posts: 1,975

@dbdigital2  I came to the DAZ setup just about the time Genesis was released, so I only had done a a few in V4/M4.  Even now, I do not have a lot of characters and because they are prehistoric people, I needed to try to morph their features as correctly as I could for archaeological illustrations. I won't be animating, so that's not an issue.  I am happy that I have been able to convert and re-purpose even V3 clothing items to work on G2 before now. But G2, like the ones before, had awkward hands and fingers to pose manually. Forearms, too. The G3's have extra  controls in the limbs and extremities not to mention all those face bones. YAY! I think that QQ was a bear for Misty to overcome to the level she did. If DAZ ever pull the finger out and sort it properlly some day, the potential is huge.

Some of the clothing shapes back in the V3-V4 days were more basic and not full of buckles, bling and hardware on steroids. I also do not need skimpy porn clothes for my figures. For that reason I don't have many recent clothing pieces, but the few I did try out during Mistry's trials worked easy-peasy.  Most of my custom clothing has dynamic hair on it, so they are saved in the Carrara browser and include G2 stuff as well.  I have been able to get many of them onto my G3s without changing anything as they don't have proper sleeves or long legs so far. Will cross that bridge when I come to it concerning footwear and other items. To date I have also had very good luck with G2 figures and clothing thanks to the help here, and I will continue to use them and move on with new characters in G3, except for my Neanderthals which I am re-doing in G3.

So it is not really time lost and I can get a better result.  The hand and finger posing are much much better. Fingers do what fingers are meant to do! Better facial expressions.  I think it depends on what you want to do with your characters. Mine are only for illustrations for young people, so I want them to be pleasing to look at, but realistic when posed in action.

    Thanks again, Misty! yesheart  Silene

Not quite what I said - I have been using Genesis 2 quite a bit lately. I certainly largely skipped the first generation of Genesis, which I think was more to do with the timing of when Daz got around to making it work in Carrara - it wasn't too long after that that Genesis 2 was launched. I tend not to like converting stuff - that's more to do with me being lazy than it not working, although converted stuff sometimes isn't as good as something made for a particular generation figure. It is definitely true to say that joint bending has got better with each generation - just compare the shoulder and armpit area of say V4 with arms by her sides compared to Genesis 2. And I think that overall realism has improved with each generation, sometimes quite subtly, but then Daz are working from a pretty high standard to start with.  But I still use V4 sometimes too, it depends on the image and what clothing etc are needed.

  • I stick to G1 and G2, G3 is so far just causing problems, I can't use Carrara (don't have to time to wait for files to save and "projecting morphs" to finish after 20 minutes) so I use Lightwave, but G3 animations are broken when exported as FBX at the moment (rig is ok to export but the facial bones is a terrible mess to use in Lightwave), and of course 90% of the stuff I have is for G1 or G2.
