Saving Pose Subset

So what's the secret to saving a pose subset? I had a full body pose I wanted to keep, but something had gotten screwed up with the eyes (from a transferred V4 pose) that could not be undone -- that is, all the eye dials were zeroed, yet the eyes were clamped shut. It's not the first time that's happened. Fortunately, I had saved the character and could bring it back.

Anyway, I know you can select the parts of the pose elements to save, but it didn't seem to work for me. I specifically unticked Head and any other option related to the head and face, plus all the extraneous morphs I know I didn't use. Saved that, applied it to the good copy of the character, and the clamped eyes returned.

I was finally able to get it to work by Ctrl-clicking on the saved pose file, and individually selecting body parts I wanted to apply the pose to. I was able to get most of the pose back except for the head and expression, but that was easily redone.

I'm thinking you have to save pose subsets in body part groups -- lower body, upper body, arms, etc, and can't just block out the head?

Eyes clamped closed sounds like a morph issue, which would be on the root figure node rather than the head.

I looked everywhere for a Shape or Pose setting, including the root, and never found anything, so it stumped me as to what the problem might be. I think it might have to do with the added bones in G3 characters for expressions. Zeroing the pose in D|S will correct it, but I'm still using older (for G2 and before) pose utilities for zeroing individual body elements, and I guess those won't affect the bones.
