Noob question about lighting

I'm a real beginner when it comes to Daz Studio, so sorry about this.

I'm running DS 4.9 and I've purchased this model off Renderosity https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/index.php?ViewProduct=104137

But I'm having issues when it comes to lighting the scene. I'm after a pretty ambient lighting (like the images on the site). I've tried with both a Distant light and with the UberEnvironment2 lighting. I basically add the light, drag it into the middle of the scene and hit render.

Attached are the results I’m getting. No matter how much I crank up the lights intensity, (or other setting),it makes no difference.

What am I doing wrong?

I’m using the NVIDIA Iray’s engine to render.

Thanks.

Two things. Using Iray the UberEnvironment2 lighting wont work it is for the 3Delight renderer. Secondly as this is an interior scene then the distant light wont show up because it will be outside and will be blocked by the walls. You will need to ade one of the other lights inside the building to get light to show up.

UberEnvironment2 is only to be used with the 3Delight engine and the distant light is similar to a sun and your trying to light up the inside of a closed box which is your model.

Try basic point lights and spot lights positioned inside your room make sure your camera is inside the room to get some early results.

Then do some more research in irays surface shaders and how to create emissive surfaces.

  • Brilliant. That makes sense now. Told you it was a noob question.

    Thanks guys.

  • Hi all,

I’m still struggling to understand how lighting works in Daz Studio (4.9). I’ve read a number of tuts and watched a few YouTube videos, and am more confused than ever.

How would you lot light an IRAY scene like this.

Say I’ve got a room, with no lights within the room itself. I turn off the headlight on the camera and change the environment to scene only. I have a window and want to simulate sunlight coming in the window.

I’ve tried with distance lights and planes using one of the IRAY shaders outside the window, but I'm failing miserably. The scene is always too dark. Tried messing with the ISO and exposure setting, but those seem to blow everything out.

I think I’m missing something. Any advice would be great.

    Thanks.

Merged with your existing thread, so that people don't have to cover the same ground again.

Have you tried adjusting the Tone Mapping section in REnder Settings, to get a longer exposure.

  • Ok. I think I'm starting to get somewhere.

Another question along a similar vein. If I'm lighting a scene using, for example, a plane with the emissives Iray shader. To get the required level of lighting would you ramp up the illumination on the planes shader, or play around with the randers Tone Mapping settings?

I know it might be down to person preference, but I’m just trying to get an idea of kind of lighting best practise.

    Thanks.

    Hm,

please let me explain my standard procedure:
    1. I choose the camera settings (F/stop, exp. time, ISO) as I would do with my real photo camera in that specific situation.
    2. Install the lights oriented on the physical resources of the set. Or set the lights as you would do in a photo studio. Or any combination of this.
    3. Adjust the intensities of your light sources until it suits your likes.

  • Nice one. Thanks for your help Andy.

    I'll keep playing. :)
