Just stumbled across this site.  It's a collection of various models that NASA has made available to the public, for 3d printing and other uses.

https://nasa3d.arc.nasa.gov/models

Usage guidelines are here:

https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/guidelines/index.html

There's a few .objs there, as well as files in a number of other formats, including a few in Blender format.

3ds files can be converted to obj format and then imported into DAZ Studio or Poser

    Who can convert those? DAZ3D?

There are a number of options for conversion, including Blender. No, DAZ Studio cannot do it alone.

    Propviewer ( http://www.sharecg.com/v/47408/gallery/11/Poser/PropViewer-3.2 ) and Blender ( https://www.blender.org/ ), amongst others. Greentoken is a free online service.

So I have to install a further, concurring 3D Design program?
    Is it really free?

You can also use AutoDesk's FBX Converter from 2013. It is free too.

A while ago, I grabbed the Voyager probe from NASA's site.  I got the higher detailed Blender version and used the free suite to convert it to .OBJ format which I then imported into Poser.

    Sincerely,

    Bill

Carrara imports the 3DS files.  Here, I was able to use Carrara to open a 3ds of a shuttle, save as an obj, and then open in Studio.

For that matter, Anim8or can do 3DS as well.  Always has been able to.

Bryce, Hexagon, Carrara will import 3ds and export obj

There was a thread about this one under suggestions, but since this is a NASA related freebies thread, I'll leave this here...

There's an .obj included, just finished an Iray render with it... The Space Sphere you see in the background was something I grabbed from Rendo, and adjusted for Iray.

Since Daz can't open it natively (.3ds, .max, etc,), the .obj will import as uniformly grey, but it has a bunch of material zones that you can fill in with your own shader sets.  I had fun with some metallic shaders and a couple of emissives (after applying Iray Uber base to everything), but there are lots of options there.

TRON has a few other NASA related freebies as well (Mars Rover, etc.).
