So, you buy a bit of content from a non-DAZ website, and install it as directed. And then you're working on a scene and remember "Hey, didn't I buy that piece of clothing that would be perfect for what I'm doing?". But since it's not a DAZ Smart Content thing you have to remember to go to the Content Library. And you start seaching under all the tons of directories. There's "My Library", but then also the "My DAZ 3D Library". But you can't remember where you bought it, so you search thru the My DAZ 3D Library, but there's no "Clothing" or "Wearables" Folder. But then you stumble on the Genesis 3 Female folder, and find a Clothing folder. And you search, but it's not there. So next you try the regular "My Library". But there's no "Clothing" or "Wearables" folders. So fi you're lucky you stumble into the People folder, and the Genesis 3 Female, and HEY there's a Clothing folder !!! So you think you've got it, but when you click you see a bunch of folders with the names of the people who developed the clothing. Bummer.
So one by one you search thru all of them until you find something that looks like the clothing you want.
Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? Maybe you guys have figured out a way to re-organize to make it easier? For example, do you re-name the developer folders to indicate what the item is?

If you look at the folders in the zip, or in many cases if you read the read me, that will tell youi where to look. Once found you can right-click on the main product folder to select Categorise.
Ahhh, okay. Thats much much better. I never even knew that Category folder was there.
You're awesome. Thanks.
HEY, that makes the stuff visible and categorized in Smart Content too !!! That's incredible !! I wish I had known that long ago.
Thanks !
FWIW, that last location you eventually "luckily stumbled into" is the standard location that clothes for all the Genesis figures should be installed into. Anything you find not in a subfolder of "People" is in the wrong place; those "tons of directories" aren't random, there's a logical system that all DAZ installers follow, and non-DAZ installers should follow (but, unfortunately, don't always).
Note that items bought from other stores will not appear in Smart Content unless you categorise them — this is not a view of all your content files, it's a filtered and sorted view of a database pointing to your bought-from-the-DAZ-store content files, and non-DAZ installers won't include the data that goes into the database entries.
I gave up on smart content a long time ago. I use the categories and products folder trees mostly these days, as some stuff won't show up in the categories folder, even if it's bought in the Daz store. There's a way to add 'shortcuts' to the various category folders for products that aren't appearing where you'd like them to, but I haven't got around to doing that yet.
If you have the Daz Deals browser plugin, a real nice way to view your content is to go to the main Daz store page, and click the 'show only items I own' checkbox. This can help you find out what you already have fairly quickly, if you are trying to remember if you have a similar outfit already or something and have LOTS of products... this won't help with the non-Daz store content, but at least you can quickly see what you have that is Daz store specific.
This is also a good way to help you remember what a product is called, if you need to go into the product folder to find the product you are looking for.
If you are using Products and Categories you are still using Smart Content in a way as they use the database.
Create your own folder structure. Load everything by hand.
