Art as an Artform, not as an Application

edited February 2013 in Carrara Discussion

JM2k, in another thread, brought up the point that we don't have any discussions around here related to Art - but rather only about the software and its mechanics. He's right, of course, which is just what we expect to find in such a place. This is, after all, the software section of the forum. I'm sure there are plenty of places on the www where we could all go and study the theories and histories of art culture and such, but here is a thread where you can feel free to let fly any questions you may have on how to combine your feelings with the collection of scene elements in front of you. Snap a test render - and tell us why it's not giving you the rush you've intended, and so on.

Unlike a lot of his tactics, however, which are often biased towards a single strand of hard-edged criticism, I'd like this thread to remain more constructive and helpful. I find that many of us learn better through civil conversation than harsh judgement. We all start somewhere - and I'd like you to feel comfortable here - even in revealing your very first render - to get started in this realm - you have to push yourself out the door. It is through practice that we improve, and through other's advice that we excel.

To begin, I'd like those of you who may not be accustomed to art as an artform,
to take some time to watch this special on one of the most influential artists of my time - to me, anyways:
Frank Frazetta - Painting with Fire
If you're at all interested in character animation, you'll also want to set aside some more time and let Cripeman take you on a journey into discovering the works of:
Eadward Muybridge - Grandfather of Animation

That's it for starters. If there's any interest in sharing thoughts in this regard, we shall find out.
Welcome, and enjoy!
Dartanbeck

    The Carrara Information Thread
For the more technical aspects of Carrara, including tutorials and any information I can find or discover, don't forget that the Carrara Information thread, stickied to the top of the Carrara forum is ever growing - and open for suggestions and additions. I am fairly alone in it's assembly, writing, and editing so far... which I don't mind at all ;) and love to just keep pushing forward, but it also means that it's not as quick to grow as some might like. There is a new Forum Thread Index of "How Do I?" post in there that will be ever growing as a place to find issues that others have already been working on. This way you won't have to start a new thread and wait. Find a related thread, skim through it to look for answers. If it's way off the mark, post a reply to it, so that it will go back to the top of the forum list, and those watching that topic, can come in and help you - which will add that new info in for the next person seeking such advice. It's an experiment, and I hope it helps everyone grow.

Throughout the thread, I've been placing These Quick Link Menus to help navigate around the thread no matter where your exploring may lead you. Another experiment that I hope helps people get to the information they need to maintain a happy existence within the interface of Carrara.
Throughout the whole Info thread, you'll find links to Cripeman's great tutorials. His video tutorials were actually a big inspiration towards my wanting to create a community Carrara learning center, so the Cripeman’s Carrara Video Tutorials Index was actually the big initial necessity that started it all. As the idea grows, I try to add more and more helpful notes, links, and articles. As we ask questions and find answers, I find it essential to link these queries to the Forum Thread Index of "How Do I?" so that the whole idea actually works as a growing, living user's manual for the entire Carrara community... us.

Chohole hosts a forum called The Art Studio which is not accessible from the dropdown menu but is from the forum home page. It is intended for discussions about the artistic choices of a project and is non-denominational so any software/process applies.

Your "artist" links are decidedly your aesthetic, but I don't really see how they relate to this topic.... I don't do barbarian illustrations and, no offense but... really? Not exactly what you would find in an art gallery today (if ever). If Joe wants to start a thread why not let him start it and see who feels like participating. Carrara does a lot more than loin cloths and dragons (not that there is anything wrong with that) but I wouldn't even go there in an "Art" with a capital A discussion....

I don't host it Holly, It's one of the DAZ 3D forums, and has been around for quite a long time.

I just keep promoting it as the ideal place for render threads.

Touche, and very well placed! I have more links to eventually add, but if I were to walk into a gallery filled with Frazetta, I'd be happier than a body builder directing traffic! lol
That's where I'm truly hoping for this whole idea to expand - in directions anyone wants it to go. I'd like to click some links, too! Explore more into what Joe, and others consider to be real art - or any other related story, blurb, picture, or link.

I don't really see Joe starting many threads, nor did I start the topic on his behalf, or just for his benefit. But I do feel that he contributes well to many topics - and that time, he gave me incentive to start this. But I do consider Frank's Art deserves a capital A! Always have! But Dragons and Fantasy are my thing!

Art Studio at the Daz3d Forums

The Art Studio Forum, the place to discuss and show off all creative aspects of any project from conception to final production and get information about the techniques and workflow that make artwork come alive!
Has your muse gone on vacation? Are you needing inspiration? Wonder how to create that perfect effect? Want some feedback on your artwork to make it better? Have a contest or challenge you'd like to run? Need some texturing tips? Find it all here.

    A Welcome from Chohole:
Take a look around. Make yourself comfy. Here you see a full-working studio. Over there, you will find advice if you’ve gotten stumped or want a new pair of eyes on your work. Here we’ve got an arsenal of tools and techniques you may not have run across. *Feel free to drop off some of your own tried-and-trues; this is a community studio, you know.* Through here, you’ll find Inspiration…everyone needs a boost now and then.

And, of course, feel free to make suggestions.

The more you participate, the more this becomes your place. Just remember, egos may be picked up upon departure. They just tend to be like gremlins and gum up the works if they make their way into the Studio.

    Now let’s get to work!

So this is meant to be a discussion or just another thread full of random links...?

    whatever.

here's a piece of mine that debuted at the Chelsea Art Museum in NYC:
    http://vimeo.com/album/222821/video/10185901

it has nothing to do with Carrara as far as I know, which I guess makes it fit in this thread, but it is what I consider art and is contemporary.

That is seriously cool! One of the best things about interactive displays is how they tend to trigger spontenaiety (not spell checking that) in people. I'm totally open to any discussion you might want to share about creating that display.

Interested in watching a good artist paint?
Watch this fantastic Time Lapse as Dan Ritchie paints: The English Gentleman , another incredible excerpt from the Daily Dose!
Daz3d sells the incredible software used in the making of this painting, offered in a variety of versions, each complete studios meant to facilitate the needs of many:
    Daz3d Store: Project Dogwaffle
I have a thread about it here.

That is pretty cool Holly, although not my sort of thing. I am very conventional in my taste in art. You may be able to see where I get inspiration from with this image, or part of it anyway. I was on an environmental kick when I did it

Thank you Garstor. :) very appreciated, and yes the goal of my "art" is not the work itself but how people respond to it and interact with it.

And yes. Links (random is debatable), pictures, stories, questions, just anything Art, with a capital A! :ahhh:

    That's perfect!
My Sister and I were just talking about how unfortunate it can be that many people view "Art" as a topic, in narrow strips, with blinders on. She is immensely talented at all aspects of art - in the traditional sense. The painting she did of her cat out of used coffee grounds as the media, is a huge conversational piece at the hospital where it is displayed. Art can be expressed in many ways. Often the worst critics are those whom simply don't get it.

Okay, as per Rogue Pilot's request; (Nudity Alert!!!)
William Andrew Loomis, known more often simply as Andrew Loomis, at "American Art Gallery" which is also a great source of links all down both sides to "Greatest American Painters".
Thanks for that tip. That's what I'm looking for!

That reminded me of the Ontario Science Center in Toronto. No art there of course (well, that's debatable) but interactivity is definitely there. Most museums have signs that read "Please Do Not Touch." Signs at the OSC read "Please Touch." :)

It has been years since I've been there -- heck nearly 6 years in Texas now...jeez... -- but I remember a tunnel with translucent panels on the walls. About every 30 seconds, a strobe would flash and the panels would capture the poses of people walking in the tunnel. It is interesting to see how some people react to stuff like that.

I'm glad you found that site, it's a great resource and learning tool. It's a massive time sink though, so be careful.

For the Loomis instructional works try http://www.placidchaos.com/AM/index.php/2006/02/21/andrew_loomis.

I can't recommend them enough. They're written primarily for the sketch artist but all of the fundamental rules still apply.
Learning to put your ideas on paper, even roughly using blocks or shapes, will help you see a how to set up a render before you even sit down at the computer.

For those who want a more comic book style (a bit off the wall I know)

    http://www.amazon.com/How-Draw-Comics-Marvel-Way/dp/0671530771/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1361670227&sr=1-4&keywords=buscema

I got my copy back in 1986 and it's finally falling apart. I'm glad to see it still on sale so that I can get a fresh copy.

Generally though, Amazon is your friend here. The field of art is deeply interconnected, pick up almost any art book and it will be useful in some way.
When you're ready for it, learn why Picasso did what he did, then when you understand that.........................?

Thanks Rogue. Very good stuff. Yeah that list would take some time to go through, eh?
If you haven't checked out the time lapse Dan Ritchie painting link above - you really should. I find it amazing how PD allows you to paint on wet paint with wet paint, if you want, and he demonstrates it's function very well!

This is your's Chohole? It's so pretty, and my husband loved it (he said "let's go!"). Needless to say he never says that about my art. LOL!

Reminds me of the Hudson River artists like Frederic Church.... His landscapes were the blockbuster movies of their day. People lined up and paid a lot of money to see them, sitting in chairs while the curtain opened to reveal these huge paintings.... He imported exotic plants to add atmosphere to the room...

Can you explain the title of this thread Dart? I don't think I understand.

I like the colors in the Easley pics above. I see why you want that Dogwaffle howler program... There was a pic with the same colors.

I can try, I guess. Art as an Artform, was flowing in my brain pan as I thought about having a place in the Carrara software forum to talk about art as art, rather than a solution to how to achieve a certain effect or affect within the workings of the application? I think?
And then part of this thought process comes from the idea that I'll soon be attempting to create a whole new "Look" to my up-coming animation series. Fresh and different, yet classic and artistic - with hand painting techniques applied in ways I've not seen. It is my hope that people will be thrilled with the effect.
So that's where the links and talk about Dogwaffle came in. I guess I might be a bit rash on that end, since I haven't yet tried it. But I'm currently studying it as I wait for it, and for this render to finish. 77 hours so far! LOL But I thought that since it lends so well to traditional oil painting and watercolor, etc., on the computer (did you see that video?) that I could get away with a quick mention of it at the beginning and be done with it - just so people know about it.
I've had Art history and training when I was young... but over the years my memory shifted towards making a living for my family over and above all, only recently to be jumping deep back into this. So rather than dig deep into the archives of my memories, I thought this might be more fresh and inspiring - and hopefully and fun thing for anyone else.
My son just got me a Hand-Carved Dragon - just now - it's gorgeous!

Why? would you like me to change something? I can't seem to find a way to delete threads, though.

I understand talking about art that has inspired us (seems to be what is happening), Always welcome to get off the Ask Aunt Agony threads, since people don't *really* want to find a solution, just complain about how DAZ has ruined their life and stepped on their rainbow....

it's the daz3daaa part that I don't understand. Maybe i'm just tired and over-thinking it. Does that mean something, or just for fun, or...?
