I wanted to create some characters for a game I am designing/prototyping.
The characters are based on a cube with rounded edges.
I thought I might be able to do this with an image mantipulation tool such as Daz. I started by creating a primitive cube and wanted to push the edges so they become rounded.
I was not able to do that so tried starting with a sphere and wanted to push from each direction so the round surface become flat. Again I was not able to do that.
Am I trying to do something that Daz cant do and if so would someone be able to suggest a tool I could use.

I assuem you mean Daz Studio. That isn't a modeller, so it wouldn't be my first choice - however, if you create a cube with three divisions and then use Edit>Object>Geometry>Convert to SubD it will round the corners - you can control the degree of rounding via the SubDivision level setting in the parameters pane under Mesh Resolution. For more control you could also select the edges (of the cube, not the edges running within each face) with the Geometry Editor and apply weight to them but that's getting a bit fiddly. For modelling you should really be looking at things like Hexagon, Blender and so on.
