Duplicating Objects - Copy and Paste - Scene Subsets Solution

I can't believe there aren't any copy/paste questions, but searching the forum gave me ziltch. That has to be a dud search hopefully. I have gone back through some threads but just have to ask at this point. I have a fern, I want to duplicate it and plop it on a flat plane. I tried selecting the plant, copy, and then clicked on the plane, then hit paste to selected object. Nothing happened. This was just a guess on my part, did I do it right? My fern is off in lah lah land somewhere.

Second question, I need a bunch of these, do I do them one at a time? I already have them the way I want them, I dont want to lose the work I put into it.

There is no copy/paste for objects, there is Create->New Node Instance and Create->New Node Instances .
They will have the same pose and textures as the original, but you can move/tilt.

If you want multiple unique entities, there is Send In the Clones
    http://www.daz3d.com/software/plugins-utilities/send-in-the-clones-ds4
    http://www.daz3d.com/software/plugins-utilities/send-in-the-clones-ds4-pro

Or you can save a setup figure, then save it and merge that into the scene several times.
I've used that on several occations, first setup a bunch of differently posed and textured figures, then create a Group containing those figures, then New Node Instances in that group (Can be a little resource heavy, I had 144 paratroopers one DS scene once, and over 100 Zombies in another.

easiest way is to save the offending item as a scene subset and load in as many as you want one at a time.

Thanks SO much! I haven't gone to bed yet (7am Florida time) because this had me stumped and frankly annoyed at myself for not figuring it out. I'll give it a try after I get some sleep- but you really made my day with the fast replies. :) :) :)

Um, since this is still my first render, have to ask- to save as a scene subset, can I click on the fern in the existing scene and save just it as a subset, or do I have to have it all by its lonely self? (If so, I'll give it plant therapy later)

When you do Save As SubSet you will be given a dialog where you check which items to save.

Nope just go to File > Save As scene Subset and choose which item you want to save, a new options window will pop up after choosing to save a scene subset. No need to delete anything. That is the beauty about this new function.

Thank you Totte and Szark! That I should be able to do, lol.
BTW, I believe I saw the scene you are describing- it was in a thread as you were developing it. It had those big walking machines and running storm troopers- was it a cloning thread or a depth of field thread. It was AWESOME.

When you say new function, is it in the new 4.5 update, or from (I'm guessing there was this version) 4.0 ?

Most new things referred to are in 4.5 (when a lot of goodies came)

as opposed to DS3A I meant. In DS3A we had to delete everything from a scene barring the item we wanted to save as a scene. PITA it was. :)

Very nice- love the ambiance of neutral tones- I assume you put the duplicates in the back first and worked your way forward? Wow, there's a lot of folks back there!

Let me quickly ask- I did the subset- now to "load it" into the scene, am I doing a "merge?" or just an "open"?

URGENT EDIT:Well, found out the hard way. Opening gave no warning, then "Clearing the scene" and poof, my scene disappeared.

I think from memory you can Open a Scene Subset without the need to merge but since I can't use DS4.5 at the moment I can't check. If in doubt use Merge. LOL Unless some kind soul tests it for you.

You can "locate" the subscene folder in your content browser then just drag the items into the scene.

It's okay, I may not be experienced with 3D, but I am with the "Save" button. :)
Let me try it YOUR way this time, lol.

(But when my scene disappeared, there was the fern, mumbling, "Don't leave on my account.")

For other brand new users, (because it took me a minute to figure it out) that was the Content Library/ Daz Studio Formats/ My Library/ Scene subsets. Trying it now. (It IS there in the folder, so here I go...)

Another question, how do I determine where this thing LANDS? (Stop snickering.)

EDIT: It's working! And it comes in on top the original fern.

    YOU FOLKS ROCK!

The usually lands where they were saved. Most stuff is saved at 0,0,0 (Universal Origo), but if you move something from scene center and save it as a sub scene, it will load at those coordinates.

Another thing is Groups, they are really useful. If you have an older propset consisting of many small props, lights etc, put everything in a group, then you cam move it in one piece, and if you save that as a subset scene, you can easily move it when it is loaded.

Try going to Top View and Drap and Drop your Subset and release the mouse at the desired loacation.

I sure will try all that- this is going to be a very useful thread due to your suggestions.

Is there a way to change the thread title to have add a hyphen then "Scene Subsets" so it can be found in searches? That way people looking for Scene Subsets will find out the answers too. It won't come up with copy/paste, but people looking for Copy/Paste or Duplicating objects need that in the title too.

"Duplicating Objects-Copy and Paste- Scene Subsets" would work.

Yeah just edit your first post and change the title. :)

Hmm, it flashes like it's loading, but nothing shows up. I get that box where I get to chose Default Load, parent to plane, and a third option, I forgot what it is- I chose Default Load, then tried parent to plane, nada. But my fern count increased in my Scene list. Wonder where the little varmits are growing?!

EDIT- and what is "Default Load?" Does it mean just plopping it in, no parenting? (Which is what I want)

Okay, just assumed if the "drap" (lol, couldn't resist) and drop wasn't working to drag it where I was putting it (in the Top View) then it must be still going on top of the original.

Yep. There they were. Just FYI.

Take your time- go enjoy your company- you have done so much already! I am just using the double click one by one method at the moment as I am really tired (going on 9am now and gotta get some sleep!) THANKS AGAIN.

This is the ferns (not placed yet, just pulled them apart from their massive pileup.)

Ok sorry for the delay. What with visitors, a walk to the shop then cooking the evening meal and lastly a nice bath I finally found what I had thought was possible.

OK try this looking through any camera hold down the Alt button (please Mac folks offer the Mac equivalent if you would, cheers) and Drag the Icon in to the Scene Viewport Window. In DS4.5 you will get a round red marker showing where the object will be placed, handy visual reference there. Then when you have the correct location release the mouse.

You can often get better results by searching Google using the parameter site:daz3d.com rather than using the site search. ;-)

For example, if you want to search for copy/paste issues, use:
    site:daz3d.com copy paste

This can also come in handy for searching the old forum (site:forumarchive.daz3d.com).

Its called Option/Opt or Alt (depending on the localization of the Keyboard on Macs. Option is the Original name of the Key, but it's called Alt in several countries (Among them Sweden).

Thx Totte. So what happens when you have a two commands one for Ctrl and one for Alt, hows does that work on a Mac? Sorry for going OT but it seems so confusing to a PC orientated person like myself. ;)

The Applekeyboard has CTRL (Control) / OPT/ALT (Option/Alt) / CMD (Command) , Command is the command key used for keyboard commands (Windows didn't have one so they uses CTRL instead).

So CTRL+ALT+X on Windows is most likely COMMAND+OPTION+X on Mac OS X (unless someone really decided to translate it otherwise)
