Transitioning From 4.8 to 4.9 Any Tips Before I Begin? Is it worth it?

I been holding out on jumping to 4.9 because my setup in 4.8 is working beautifully and I didn't want to mess things up. Now I'm curious about the genesis 8 figure and want to try it out but I don't want to screw up my custom folder path. I have my runtime directory away from the default C drive and forgot the method I used to preserve everything as I have them (smart content, etc.) I could use some advice on anything very important I should do first before I download and install 4.9. BTW, besides Genesis 8, have I been missing anything significant in 4.9?

Export your user data, just to be safe.

Consider installing the beta version of DS 4.9.4.117. It will run along side of your 4.8 and you can go back to using 4.8 if you are unhappy. You still need to do the database conversion, though.

READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FIRST POST IN THIS THREAD! It is imperative.

The is no difference as to how 4.8 and 4.9 map and address content.

4.9 introduced LOCAL USER, which is a giant hodge podge of everything you modify or create.

DAz didn't expect people to go mucking about in the bowels of the database then saw the horrible things that happened when some people did (unwisely).  The database is fragile enough as is, if you choose to poke it with a stick don't be surprised that it falls over.

Now I'm conflicted about upgrading. The only reason I'm considering doing it is to try out the genesis 8 character. So is Genesis 8 worth it?

Personally, I like to keep up to date. New features are added, bugs are fixed (and of course new ones are sometimes introduced). Genesis 8 has some nice new features, but Genesis 2 and 3 are also very nice.

I think there is a BETA available too that you can try - I would check out that option if possible before upgrading.

I went from a later version of 4.8 to the most recent 4.9 and now I cannot render in Iray. If I set the dropdown in the viewport to Iray it works fine, but when I click render I just get a small (much smaller than my render settings) solid grey render. 3DL renders fine and I've tried reinstalling from scratch, updating my drivers, rendering just a cube with the Iray ubershader on it, resetting the render options to default, rendering with just CPU... all I get get out of Iray is that tiny grey render. I am 100% sure that this is a weird, unique issue to my particular setup and that eventually I will track it down and fix it, but if I'd been smart I would have tried out the most recent BETA first.

Have you checked the parameter settings for the camera you are rendering  from, to be sure don't have Use Local Dimensions turned on?  Turning that on will override the dimensions and aspect ratio that you set in Render Settings.

That was a good thought - but no, that's not it. sad I'm sure it must be something like that though. I was having a weird issue with panels opening up and covering the whole screen that turned out to be something weird in my old saved layout;/theme resetting to the preinstalled city limits and darkside fixed that one, so it's probably something that simple.

If I don't figure it out on my own over the weekend, I think I'll just submit a support ticket on Monday and see if they can help me find it. I mostly render in Carrara or Blender and pretty much just use DAZ to rig things, so it's not an urgent issue, it's just keeping me from finishing a couple freebie promos and fully playing with Genesis 3. wink
