Genesis 8 & SSS

Hi

One of the things I read about G8 was the improved Sub SUrface Scattering but for the life of me I can't get it to work. I downloaded G8, applied the default skin and clicked on  the 75% button and then rendered using iRay and can't seem to get any transluscent effect on the skin. Y've seen some amazing renders in the Gallery where the SSS is showing through the ears and nose but I can't seem to reproduce it. Is there something I'm missing? I've tried rotating the HDRI dome in all directions but still can't get the effect. BTW I'm lighting ONLY with an HDRI dome - do I need to place lights in teh scene for SSS?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you have your lights too bright or too dim it will not be so obvious. Most of the renders you see with that effect are using bright flood & spot lights. Some of thoserenders you see in the DAZ store also sometimes raise the glossiness/specular effect on the skin to get more shimmery looking skin.

I know it costs money ($16) but if you are just interest in getting portrait style renders I recommend J Cade's Painterly. Then you can look at how J Cade set up that excellent portrait lighting.

  • thanks nonesuch00 for the suggestion but surely we should be able to do this in DAZ studio without external applications? I was hoping that the blurb about G8 was hinting that they have made it easier to do this.

Painters Light  is not an external application but a set of lights.

Sorry, I meant Painter's Lights not Painterly.
