Layered Image Editor to apply tattoo

This is my first attempt to use the Layered Image Editor. I followed the Youtube video "DAZ Studio Tutorial - Layered Image Editor - Make your own Tattoos" from Brian Loukatos, Nov 26 2013, applying a butterfly to the figure's shoulder.

When he selected the choulder, the properties appeared in the Surfaces tab. When I selected the shoulder, the surfaces tab did not show the properties, instead all I saw was the "What Do I Do?" placeholder text.  The only way I could get to the properties where the LIE is invoked was to select the figure, but when I did that, I presume that removed the selection of the shoulder, and as a result I saw the LIE window but no texture appeared, and nothing happened, and when after 20 minutes I cancelled out of the LIE window all the surfaces on my figure had lost their correct textures.

What is the correct way to invoke the LIE? Does it actually work as advertized or should I just forget it?

Which tool did you use? For clicking to select both the figure and the surface you need to be using the Surface Selection tool - from the Tools menu if it isn't on one of your tool bars.
