Does anyone have a carbon weave shader they wish to share?

Hi there

Does anyone have a carbon weave shader they wish to share?

Thanks

You should be able to build one using the excellent Veloute plugin from Inagoni.

    Thanks for the answer Woodscreation

I had hoped for a free one....

I looked it up online. I think you can get it with a Check shader or a Brick shader.... maybe set to Anisotropic...

I'm not exactly sure how it looks in real life.... or what level of detail you need.

Here's a home made irregular pattern, not seamless - but you can use it freely.

    Thanks for the effort DA

Its going to be a 120 cm picture of a kayak-paddle so it has to be pretty lifelike.

Here's one I made in Genetica.
use it as a mixer in the Colour Channel
use it in the Highlight Channel
and use it in the Bump Channel.

Depending on the size of the object and UV-map layout, you might want to Tile it.
    (It is seamless)

Varsel, would it be possible to share the shader itself?

...as I would not know what to do with what you have shared.

I cant see any weave in the bottom picture.

    Hi Mac Mic :)

You should be able to create a basic carbon weave,, or fabric,.. by using the Check pattern as Holy mentioned above.
you can also use the transform options in procedural functions like Fractal noise, to create a directional grain,.
    it's a bit like a pencil cross-hatch shader,,

Here;s a quick example Procedural Shader,. so you can either adjust the parameters to suit the scale of your model,.
or apply it to a plane and export that out as an OBJ, to use Carrara to convert the Procedural shader, to a Texture map,.
then you can edit that texture map. etc.

    Thanks 3DAGE

    I will try this out

It might take some time, as I am not used to shaders.

EDIT Can I not use the shader directly on the paddle?

    Ah!

You need some rather large fixings then. 3.5 feet size posters is something outside of my achievements.

The first one wasn't weave, but my interpretation of what google showed me it looked like.
    This one is a weave.

And this is how I did build up the shader.

In the color Channel I chose a mixer. One colour as dark grey and the other as black.
This is just to fake the apperance. (as far as I know Carbon fiber are black).
In the Highligt channel I used the same map.
The Shininess is set to 20 %
And in the Bump Channel I also used the same map.
The bump value I set to 5 % (this value is set in the top shader)

The maps are tiled. The Horizontal and Vertical Tile values will depend on the scale of the object and UV-map. Might be a trial and error exercise to get it right.

    Thanks Varsel

What do you do with the blender of the two colors

As you can see I only get the weave at the hilite at the tip of the paddle

What can I do about that?

    OK

I rotated the light and placed one in the other end

Ah yes. It's all about lights and mirrors.... magical.

Lights : The Holy Grail of 3D.
Cripeman has some tutorials about this. Check the Carrara 8 information at the stickies on top in this forum.

What you see is the shininess.
What you can also do is to chose a mixer in the Highlight channel. Use different values in the Source channels and use the texture map as a blender.

Some adjustments with the bump value might also help.

Just wanted to thank Holly about the heads up on the Veloute Shader. (made by Julien-inagoni). For less than $35.00, what a bargain! :)

I have a new toy to play with. This is a basic basket weave I created with the Veloute plug-in.

Sorry, hope I didn't derail the thread - just wanted to thank Holly for her Carrara insight and wisdom. :)

It is not 100% realistic, but for now I thanks all for their support.

Thank you all for your quick responces

    Special thanks to Varsel

Design Acrobat, how did you get the object so evenly lit?

Three point lighting all with an HDRI.

Her web space is a good page to have constant access to, as she has an excellent list of links to Carrara plugins - and useful articles, too. I often re-read her article about plugins for a better description of what they do. The rest of them are good, too. For a great lighting tip, check out her tutorial for IBL (Image Based Lighting).
While you're at it, have a nice shopping spree amongst her freebies! ;)

    Edit:
I actually have her page as a separate Homepage tab so it's always available with a single mouse-click!

Thanks for the link! Still having fun with Veloute though. Will check out the plug-ins later.

Here's a Komodo dragon I modeled and put a one layer Veloute on it to simule the rows of scales it has. Kind of like the blue I initially added. heh Probably needs to be mixed with the original texture and light map to get the more realistic view.
