seems that there used to be a default setting the gave you a nice bright work area...

do some of the interface presets brighter?
below first one with no preview second with some lites... I can use iray for the scene preview and boost all settings but that's a extra layer of work...

Render Settings > Editor > General > Auto Headlamp?
doesn't seem to make a difference..
I have two lights aimed at the truck ... cranked up to beyound absurd...
and the render looks like this ...
and even with preview lights.. still what was above
