Ah, good news. This was exactly the kind of development I was hoping for to make me reconsider.
There is no new team. Tugspx is the original OcDS developer from whom t3 took over and now he is back on board and working with t3. So nothing new. The last couple of posts were promising, but I am not holding my breath until there is an actual functional version posted/released.
In the meantime I am having fun with Iray.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Do you know which dev was responsible for 1.2? Could bode well if it was Tugspx.
And yes, holding one's breath on this would be tremendously bad advice. Legionair, if you're reconsidering, I didn't mean to imply you should reconsider in the positive. It's still a mess over there. If you're not already invest in it, I'd recommend continuing to wait. And, if while waiting you happen to master iray (which there may be time for if history is any indicator), I'd not even bother.
He was the original developer. At that time it was still called DAZ 2 Octane. Was before my time though. Based on the forum post history it looks like he left/took a break/whatever around mid 2012. OcDS 1.2 was t_3's work as far as I can tell.
Getting used to Iray was easy after working with OcDS. Same principles. I still prefer some aspects of OcDS (texture management for example and the viewport response). If a functional release appears I will definitely give it a chance.

Anybody knows if there´s a demo for this available already? Just like there are demos for Octane standalone and Octane for Poser. I´ve been looking but haven´t found anything yet.
Nope. There is no demo. Probably won't be available until it is officially released would be my guess.

I took the initial dip about a year ago, then asked for my money back within 48 hours.
But I still keep my eyes open to see if the cloud cover cleared a bit. I was hopeful that with a change of blood there might be more reassuring developments.
However, considering that I returned it once, Otoy might not even allow me to purchase again.
A new beta that, by all accounts and reports, resolves a lot of the outstanding issues has been released. I have yet to install it so have no personal knowledge but the OTOY forums are generally abuzz with happiness :)
I got a message for that opening DAZ studio but since I only own 1.2 I assume I would have to upgrade, not prepared to pay more to beta test something that may not work as well as the stable build I have I am afraid.
...
Looks really cool!
I wish they´d release a demo of Octane for DS already, its been a while and I still cant find the demo.
There is no demo. Beta has been dragging on for years. Granted, the current beta is very good, and the plugin has always been very impressive and ambitious. It's still not there for the masses. It's still the only render engine I use with DS, but I'm very familiar with all the quirks and really appreciate all the featuers so I deal with the issues.
There are demos for other versions, so I would try those if people are curious to what Octane Render does. However you can't test the DS implementation which is sad stuff.
old thread new weird isssue
yeah still on Octane 2 in DS
when I parent a camera to a figure's head which is wearing a hat one of two really weird things happen
I think it is DAZ studio doing it sending to Octane as I had a very similar issue using iray where geoshell hair addons made the figure and hair vanish, Octane was fine in that case. So possibly DS loading info on the graphics card is the issue?
OK this is driving me bonkers
does anyone else still use OrDS 2.25.0.16 even?
I am importing Mandelbulber 3D fractal meshes too big to UV map in Zbrush cut down and converted to obj
still 15million faces in DAZ studio
so using XYZ projection in node editor to add texture maps
tiling the 2D transform or if I chose 3D transform, both same just an extra parameter, works as expected on a still image but if I render an animation the z axis is stretched whether I use object space or global, whether the camera or object moves or not is identical shot
I am totally baffled
correct projection seen on still images anywhere on timeline
how they render animated mode
The imported fractal meshes look very inspiring!
@ projection
As far as I remember parts of the projection system for textures was reworked in the official OctaneRender standalone version at some point during the 2.x cycle.
In February 2016 the OctaneRender plugin for DAZ Studio was updated to feature the same names for the projection modes.
From that point on projection should work the same in the plugin and standalone.
Compare this thread about IES lights in which some projection modes are mentioned:
https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=52741
It would take some digging around to find out if the 2.x version you are using is still using the "old" projection, the updated projection with the adjusted names in OcDS or an up to date projection mode.

@ issues with animation
You may want to export animations from the Daz Studio plugin to Ocanerender standalone and render animations there.
compare:
https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=52847#p265805/
There may be some ongoing issues when rendering animations directly in the DAZ Studio plugin.
In addition the plugin can not support all OctaneRender animation features like all types of motion blur because they are not supported in DAZ Studio.
You still may want to ask on the Otoy forum.
Some of the active users there may have more recent experience with animations and can tell you if this issue still applies to the latest version.

@ support for older OctaneRender versions
The official stance is that support is provided for the current version of the software.
It is impractical for moderators or developers to install older versions of plugins trying to provide support for errors that may have long been fixed with the newer version.
- 20$ per month subscription for OctaneRender 3 is available
or
- Wait until OctaneRender 4 is released.
Based on the information in the video at around 1:00 the licensing system may offer additional solutions like a "free tier" for users with up to 2 GPU at that point...
thankyou,
it is a OrDS bug as OR4 Carrara it worked as expected on a smaller geometry editor cut down and replicated version of that mesh, Carrara cannot import massive meshes of that size hence I was forced to use DAZ studio, it would be interesting to try the standalone, I have 3 and for Carrara too but 2 works as well.
I have noticed differences between animations and static renders before, mostly in scene settings.
Not willing to upgrade my DS plugin as it is considerably more than my Carrara one was and I already paid quite a bit upgrading from 1.5 too as was past the beta cutoff point.
Not terribly fond of DAZ studio for animation anyway,
will study your links this weekend to see if can find any more solutions.
Bah, for $900 you'd think this would be a non-issue, I'm sticking with Iray; save myself $900!
Yeah, if I had a money tree I would definitely waste $20 per month on an un-updated program/plugin!
I don't as pointed out have the updated version
bought it well over 3 years ago
under a different developer
so not a good guide as to it's value
Octane render standalone itself I love and the Carrara plugin, I even prefer the DAZ studio version to iray
2018 - 11 - 23 edited to remove outdated information
Please check the official thread on the Otoy forum for updated information about V4 licensing.

and yes it works fine exported to the standalone and I can use Octane render 3 then too and combine with an exported Carrara scene
