Custom Categories / Content DB and new computer, or install, or content move question

I use custom categories to organize/find my stuff.  You can back it up using Export User Data, to restore to another computer or another install.  Do those categories rely on the physical path, or Library name?

Using Windows 10 x64.  A lot of my stuff in in the "My Daz 3D Library", in the default Public Documents folder.  Some is in the "My Library", in the Documents folder of my profile.

It's not organized that well.  A small amount of Daz store stuff is in the document folder of my profile, most in the public folder.  A lot of 3rd party content in the document folder of my profile, some in the public.  I'll be building a new computer soon.  My idea was to re-organize, but will the categories break for things in a different Library folder?

In short, I have:

My Library - Some Daz, maybe half 3rd party, my stuff

My DAZ 3D Library - Most Daz, maybe half 3rd party

To organize better, I thought something like this:

My Library - My stuff

My DAZ 3D Library - All DAZ store stuff

My 3rd Party Library - All content bought from another place

If I do that, will the categories break from the DAZ stuff that was in "My Library" getting re-installed to the "My DAZ 3D Library" library?  And the categories for the 3rd party content in the "My Library" and "My DAZ 3D Library" libraries being installed into a different library (My 3rd Party Library)?

  • hi,

    it depend your needs

    - there is my libraries path (picture) and it's not all,

i have also some "test" library before i reinstall in dedicated library

it need dedicated library when some products like "shoes" or 'clothes' have not input in 'smart content' (metadata)

more easy to find "manualy" on content library

  • As long as this is Daz Studio 4.9 the database uses relative paths - so neither the name of the content directory nor its location matter, only the location within the content directory.

Yes, it's Daz Studio 4.9.  So by the name of the content directory, you mean as long as the path with the directories stays the same, it can be moved from one to another?

For example, from "My DAZ 3D Library" to "My Library"

Yes, there's nothing special about those names and you can change them freely. Install Manager's manifests folder does, however, contain files that use absolute paths.

  • OK, great.  Thanks Richard!

I was stuck having to re-install Windows 10 on my render box.  So having to re-install Daz on that got me thinking of the organization, and how it could be better.  And a self-discovery with a really nice Install Manager feature - exporting & importing CSVs!  From my main PC, I exported the list of installed items.  Then simply import the list on my render box, and voila!  All my Daz store content listed to download and install.  Wish I knew of that earlier.

Stuff bought at another store is a different story, however.  I was thinking a separate library of those items would be easy to maintain - theoretically, I should be able to just copy the content from one machine or install to another?

Library organization is on my brain as I plan on upgrading my system soon.  smiley

Good idea!  I like your "test library" idea, easy to remove something if not liked.  May do that soon as I plan on a new system in the near future.
