Darius 8 ideas

Can someone redo Darius from the original merchant skin texture of Darius 6 for a New Darius 8 Default Model? Darius 6 looks much better than Darius 7. Darius 7 looks more like an upgrade for Cayman FW. Darius 6 has a beautiful skin texture that that stands out from most of the African male skin textures here on Daz3d.com. The only other African Male Skin Texture from the past that looks as real as Darius 6 in it's default state is The Rob Elite Texture for M4. The only flaw in the Darius 6 model were the eyes, they just didn't really go well with the skin texture. If you were to take the eyes from Darius 7 & put them on Darius 6 I think that he would look perfect!

And this time leave off the baked on facial hair. People want options on that issue. Darius 7 had no clean shaven option.

Yes agree about baked on hair. Although I made a no hair matt and another person made a mask to cover it it limits its usefulness

I clicked on this thread thinking something new had come out that I desperately wanted to buy... but no... so, I'll just say I support the poster of this thread 110%.

I'd also really like it if Darius 8 and Monique 8 could come out sooner rather than later. We've don't need 7 kinds of caucasian before we get any variety. Let's get one of each major human ethnic group (Daz has actually never even done anyone native to the western hemisphere though... which is odd considering how vast the population of 'Native Americans' is the moment you step outside the USA itself, and Latin-cultured Native Americans are set to become a huge chunk of the population of the USA in a few decades) out there before we start filling in crowds of people from nearby villages.

But I could really use a modern copy of Darius.

    - As noted, don't bake in the body / facial hair. Leave that as a user's choice. I never bought 7.

    - Make him versatile enough to cover a wide range of 'real looking' people.

Yes!! Times are changing and I think now more than ever people appreciate diversity. I'm desperately waiting for a black G8 figure.

Does Hawaii count as Western Hemisphere or Native American? Because I distinctly remember G3 male and female characters who looked as such.

Not Native American....Polynesian (though I thought Kalea looked more Melanesian than Polynesian ;)). Like maybe Kalea was Fijian and Kimo was Maori. LOL

Still a solid native-to-the-western-hemisphere ethnicity, even though obviously Polynesians are on both sides. I would also love to see more though.

I don't have Darius 6 but really like Darius7. I'm thankful Hellboy came up with a clean shaven preset, though that should have been included. I hope clean shaven options are included on all future male characters. Facial hair is great, but limiting especially if you even want to make child versions of the characters.

What if the photo reference has all these details baked into it? Do people just clone skin from other areas to cover it? Or is it better to shoot the living model twice, once with a 5 oclock shadow and once more fully shaven?

  • It was a half hour photoshop job to clone away Darius 7's beard. I'm sure some models may not want to remove their facial hair, but it shouldn't be required if they hire someone with talent at photo editing.

Yeesh. I would probably have color corrected and pasted in a chunk of Darius 6's lower face at that point.

If I recall and it has been a while, I actually think Darius's lips were a problem texture. They are larger so this is a bit more obvious that it is clear where the lip texture is and the rest of his face. Getting the transition area to look correct takes time, because his beard goes around his mouth, and the beard kind of disguises the transition area so you don't see that the lips look computer generated. It doesn't help that the store seems to go for men wearing lipgloss.

Do you have a link to the clean shaven preset? that is the main reason I don't use Darius much.

Awesome, thanks Serene! I originally did the same as you in photoshop, but it just never really looked right.

  • No problemo. Even in these presets you can see the problematic white line 'shine' transition area around the upper lips. They are still great though but the skin of the lips doesn't quite work with the surrounding area, and most people don't have white lip liner around their upper lip.

This completely! However, even though WE don't need masses of Caucasians right away, where Daz and PAs keep saying they don't sell nearly as well as Europeans and Asians, they do need them before its safer to release other skin colors. The 3D market is still steeped in white patriarchal culture, unfortunately... :/

I'm not sure I completely agree. When I look at people with dark skin I always notice a brightened area just around the lip. Literally a line that is covered in skin that is hairless and quite smooth, often shinier than the lip itself. The problem could be more in the fact that when photographing a darker skinned person the exposure lengths needed to capture the dark skin overall cause areas like the lip line to become overexposed.

Not to pick on you as such, please understand. this mindset is shared amoung the minds of many users. Let me state as clearly as I can that Skins should not be so ethnicity specific in the first place. People keep looking for skins based on some sort of race, when in reality if the artist knows what they are doing then they can make almost any texture appear as any race.

All the rules are different now. With engines like Iray we can afford much more freedom and should consider broader uses for our content.

  • I guess that depends on the lighting. Yes I can see it in some  photographs where the light shines specifically on the persons face a certain way. But not everyone has it and depends on the lighting. Personally I would tone it down as it looks baked in to me.

    Darius 7 is wearing Vaseline!

He isn't the only one. For some reason they made a lot of the gen 7 men with the high gloss lips. I usually fix it by pasting another bodyparts texture in that channel and going back and putting the textures back in the  right areas of the lip setting. In this case hellboy provided a fix for that if you downloadhis patch.

  • This drives me crazy on almost every character too. I load them with (supposedly) the nude face texture, go select all the skin surfaces to make tweaks - should be basically the same all over, right?

    specularity randomly different

    Hmmmmmmm...

  • It is probably a holdover from Victoria 7. Most of the guy stuff is designed from the female counterpart, and there are those who prefer their women to have glossy lips even if their skin is naked of makeup. It looks pretty odd, since high sheen lipgloss isn't a common sight these days.

  • Can anyone tell me what hair the OP used in that first picture?

It´s called Cornrows for G2M/G2F and is available at Renderosity.

I have the hair, it auto-fits well to G8 and I recommend it.
