Render Question

Ok here is my issue. I have problems with the time/quality of my renders.

When you look at lisa (The single lady render) is renderd at default settings at 720p and took aboput 10-15 mins give or take.

The complete scene was renderd at 1080p (then i resized it to 720p) at verry high settings (See screenshot) but took so long i pressed the render button before i went to bed.

How can i get the similar quality on my scenes with similar time. I know its a full scene and therefore will take longer. Will adding more light be an option? I would like to be able to make several renders a day. I dont have a bad pc (i7 4770-K. 16GB RAMM ATI R9 280 Royal King)

Thankis

Indoor scenes always take longer to render because of light bounce calculations.  Yes the light interacts with every single item in the scene, and then the light that bounces off of an item interacts with everything in the scene, and it keeps going like that till all of the light has been absorbed by objects.
It looks like your render went to 7200 seconds (2 hours) and called it a day.

So... Here are the settings that you need to change:

    1. Max Samples : 15000 (or if you click the little gear icon above the number you can change the maximum to any number, I usualy set mine to 30000) (This sets the maximum number of iterations that the render will generate)
    2. Max Time : 0 (setting this to zero tells Iray to continue rendering untill the other settings are met)
    3. Rendering Converged Ratio : 100% (This tells Iray what percentage of pixels need to be perfect before considering the render complete)

Because you have an AMD (formerly ATI) GPU, your Iray renders exclusively in CPU mode.  To get the best performance out of Iray it is recommended that you have at least a 6GB Nvidia GPU (8GB or more if you do complex scenes)

  • Ok i was afraid of this... I will now try the same scene using the 3Delight engine and see what the difference will be (quality and timewise). I am not looking for foto realism but the same quality as teh single lady would be more then enough.

Maybe i will use your recommended settings for one image tonight when i go to bed and see how it will turn out.

Looking at prices but a GTX 1070 with 8GB is around € 500,-  and i dont have that kind of money right now to spend on a graphics card. (Not even going to check the Quadro or Tesla cards)

Right now the GTX 1060 6GB and GTX 1070 prices are inflated because of the crypto currency boom that happened over the summer.
You should be able to get a GTX 1080 for not much more than that.

Not sure which part of Europe you are in, but amzon.de (Germany) has a Gigabyte GTX 1080 for  € 516, and the cheapest GTX 1070 is  € 407 (and both are amazon prime)

  • Well i just tried the 3Delight engine. I had to create a new scene because the old one was more optimized for iRay.

Used a slightly different location and pose But this image was rendered in 20 mins !! and i have tyo say for what i want to do the quality is actualy nice.

I live in the Netherlands and at some point i will need a new video card and that will certainly be a Nvidia again but for now i have to work with what i have.

At work we have a pc we use for VR, i may install Daz3D on it as it has a GTX 1080 TI graphics card and see how that looks and how the performance is.
