Content library memory aids

What tricks have people discovered to help them remember and locate things in their content library (beyond the obvious of choosing a meaningful set of category names)?

I find I have more content than I can possibly remember all the features of, thus the options available to me become unused and lost simply because I forget they are available, unless I happen to be reading up on a product and go "oh yeah, it can do X too!".  For example I have created fake category names with comments that remind me to look for a particular parameter, or look for morphs in a particular node, or suggest an alternate nonstandard use, just so I'll see and remember the instant I view the folder.  Or if something has a more complex readme that I might forget exists (since most products don't have one or don't have one you refer to) I might create a content library icon for it so I see it's available.

I vaguely recall I purchased a bunch of useful morphs to fix certain problems with figures, but can't remember what they are or where they are, so they are going unused until I stumble across them again.

What are some things others have found are helpful memory aids relating to content?

  • I would recommend going old school. You know Paper and pencil. Get a spiral notebook and write down where you keep certain things you use for certain projects. Now if you just have to be modern you could use Acess, Excel or some equivalent database or spreadsheet software that lets you do searches but for me I like just having Paper and pencil you can't go wrong. First decide what you want to create, then do a search on the daz and rederosity and see if you already have what you need to do the render. I sometimes buy things I don't need, because I forget I already had the item necessary at the other store or a freebie I fixed to work. An example of my Paper and pencil old school method has a section called Rome. In this section it shows me all the clothes, models and props that would fit this period along with the runtime locations of textures for said items so there is no need to hunt them down. After you do this once you always know where your stuff is. Animals, Vehicles both Land and Water and Air just keep going. Just takes a little work! Need pictures print out a greyscale picture from website cut and pase. If you do this electronically it is easier to fix or update if you need but pencil is also erasable. Oh, with a Acess database you can cut and paste the picture from the website into you database in color. You can also use a binder and add Color tabs with labels and print stuff out and get a 3 ring hole puncher to put your printouts in. Lastly, If you just want a quick and easy way out> You can buy a 3D database already setup that you just have to run on your runtime but where is the fun in that?

  • in Content library you can use "TAGS"
edit/added a tag it help to find specific target category via 'search'

as example in search you enter words "sport shoes"
only "sport shoes" will be show, if previously you manualy edit/added the tags

edit/added 'tags' is the best solution
