Fit texture to prop?

How do I go about fitting a texture (jpg) to a prop?
I am trying to make a simple asphalt roadway. I have a nice texture with the center lines etc and I made a simple board shaped prop with slightly rounded corners to simulate the shape of a road.
I've applied the texture played with tiling etc. but zero luck getting anything like the image to appear as a texture on my "road". Playing with displacement and specular etc. vary the apparant color of the prop but nothing seems to work to get the texture to appear in view port not to mention getting it to line up with the prop.
I need to learn to do this as I often make props I cannot find and have the same problem fitting a texture image (.jpg) onto a prop.
Mostly make the actual shapes either in DS / Primitives or Hexagon. Simple things like a wood texture work pretty well but then I don't typically need to "line up" the shape with the prop.
In this case I need the asphalt with the painted centerlines to run down the middle so it looks like a road?
Often orientation is an issue as well, what is "up" or "down" when saving a texture in relation to the prop?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

The first question that pops in mind is, did you create a UV map of your model? That's what lets the program know where to map what onto your surfaces. Without a UV map, any texture you apply will basically be a repeating tile pattern over the whole surface, which is what you'll get on a Daz primitive with a shader preset.
Second is, does your .jpg texture have whitespace? The image should go edge to edge for a repeating tile, preferably with matched edges to hide the seams.
I made primitive with DS and don't recall any UV options offered?
I also exported to .obj to try. Some times I get lucky and what I make fits with some tinkering.
similar problem... and I know I'm missing a step... this is a boot... it has four texture zones applied in 3dmax... I can import it into Daz (object format) and apply colors...
but I can't apply a patterned texture to them..
Any ideas ...
googling anything with creating textures selecting them etc generates an immense list of useless links...
Is it UV mapped? Splitting it into materials isn't the same as UVing.
how do you link the UVs so daz knows they're there?
If you reimport the OBJ into your modeller is the mapping still there? if not it may be your export settings that need adjusting.
Thanks...
had to learn two new tricks..
---
I did learn how to make texture maps .. which wasn't the exact issue but good to know
(which is a different UV map you can export to photoshop as opposed to the UV map that exports with objects)
---
But I did learn how to make max dump the uv map and how to make daz read it
using a couple check boxes that had never been needed before..

so now little Rosie the Rivited has her boots for spashing through puddles.
