Individual morphs lost on save-over

hello all =)
i was working on a prop/figure i made, and i had a version stored that had some of the morphs already embedded to the figure. in the data folder for the prop, in the morphs folder, i could see all of the morphs that were added as individual files.
i was in the process of adding the last morphs, and studio crashed on me. thats not the issue, and no big deal, lesson learned. so for the next round i loaded a stored figure with none of the morphs, proceeded to add them all, and saved the prop with all morphs. first i saved it as a file to add all the morphs, and kept saving over that file (just a regular scene file). when all morphs were added and edited, i saved the scene file, and then saved the figure/prop file writing over the older version. when i checked the data>morphs folder i noticed all the individual morphs were gone, and the file name was replaced with scene file name.
i didnt think anything of it as no problem or issue has resulted from this. i packed the product, installed on a clean system and everything works just fine.
so now i wanted to go back to remove one of the morphs. i assume this is done by simply deleting the individual morph from the data>morphs folder but all thats there is one file with the name of the scene file i was editing/working from when doing all the morphs.
why did the individual morphs go away, do i need to have them like that in the first place, and how do i remove just one morph from the list of embedded morphs on a figure/prop?!?
Comments
uh oh... i can feel the weight and pressure of the "squishment" =P
another issue i had when working while working on this same item was that saving character presets (so pose/morph and material can be saved for easy set up) did not work. the saved presets loaded no item when applied. i expected an "actor" to be made, much like the character presets of genesis like tori and gabi.
help =(
Hi, I think DazStudio failed badly at the point where you noticed "all the individual morphs were gone, and the file name was replaced with scene file name."
But wait your talking about a prop.. if it is a static object I save such things as a Scene-Subset. In your case it seems that you have saved it once as a Figure/Prop Asset but now somehow maybe a bug it became a Scene-Subset - to me it just sounds exactly like that: individual morphs were gone - replaced with scene file name.
To fix all these issues you can try to save your prop with Save Figure/Prop Asset - but this time with a diffrent "Item" name in the dialouge, I usualy add a underscore and a version number at the end everytime I save changes to my figure - just to be save. For the final product you can save it once again with no number at the end. With this method you can store your changes to the Figure/Prop in the individual items side by side in the product folder of your dazStudio data folder - changes to the properties / morphs or added ones gets saved along this way.
This is much easier than to use Save Morph Assets where you have to remember and select every parameter you have changed or added.
And BTW I dont trust this Save Modified Assets anymore because if something goes wrong you have no backup.
First make shure save Prop/Figure Asset works correctly and the individual morphs gets saved into the data folder as DUF/PNG. To double check - load this item from the library into a new scene and then save presets.
i did as you suggested, loaded the figure/prop and saved a new one, all the individual morphs appeared in the data>morphs folder as desired. i then loaded the scene subsets and resaved as character presets, taking the filesize down from about 500mb to 500kb, and those all worked as expected as well, loading with an option to apply or as new figure.
thanks =)
i still dont know why the morphs were lost, i do not believe i saved as a scene subset with the final save, and even still, im surprised doing so would have deleted the existing individual morphs, but oh well...
My general rule of thumb is "never" save a scene with unfinished work in it. [one exception would be at key [good] moments when rigging huge figures]
Save the individual morphs as you make them. Take note of the folders you have saved them too and be sure that after any changes they are resaved to the very same folders [so the improved morphs will overwrite the older morphs].
Saving a main figure/prop does not automatically save morphs. Seems to on the very first save but not following that. Saving scenes with unfinished [unsaved] work in it can result in massive migraines.
actually, what prompted the saving was the crashing... as i was editing parameters of the morphs, on opening/moving windows, daz just LOVES to crash, so i would load some, save the scene, load more, save the scene, wash, rinse repeat...
"hopefully", everything is rectified, lol...
thanks =)
