Does Aynone Have the FaceGen Artist Pro? If so...

First, I'd like to know how good it works and people's experience with it. Is there a particular figure it works really good with?

I also wonder if anyone has tried modeling alien faces with it? Like the Na'vi from Avatar? As a test?

Then on top of that, would someone be willing to use it to creating a liking of a couple of actors? Commissioned, of course!

I would heartily recommend Facegen.  I own the software and use that with a few other tools to create renditions of real people.  If you wish to commission me to create a few actors, I can do it for a fee...

  • I don't think you'll be able to use facegen artist pro to give you a believable alien face like you are suggesting. With the Avatar aliens having such exaggerated features it's probably not going to give you the result you're looking for. I would suggest that you invest a little in something that is more suited to making morphs like Blender, Blacksmith3d, 3dCoat or something like that. (I tried to give you some low cost options but there's always Zbrush and Mudbox, too.) Facegen gives you a good starting point, but it's not an "Easy" button. I've been using it for a few weeks now and there are limitations. Eventually you are going to find yourself having to do some modeling in order to get close to what you want.

I used it to make a Peter Capaldi G3M, but once I did that, I got a good Face/skin but the color map was the only one it output. You're going to have to approach doing the bump, normal, spec, glossy and other maps yourself somehow.

  • I've found that the better quality and bigger the original image, the better the face. Also I always try to make two faces. One using just the front image and one with the front and side. Depending on the images used and shape of the face, sometimes one made with a single image can be better. Also if you create a few heads with different images that still do not look quite right, load in the one with the best texture and then you can start to blend between the two heads the in facegen the save and export the result.

For something like an alien , if it is based on a character, I would create a morph of the actor or person, then dial in an alien morph in Daz Studio. This means that for something like the Na'vi you can create different characters with just one Na'vi morph. Facegen was created for human proportioned faces and isn't really the create at cartoon or alien ones. I think there are some free base Na'vi morphs for some of the older figures on Sharecg eg "Pandora Princess" the could be convert for use on Genesis figures
