I have used 7-zip for many years. It handles everything I'll need. It's free, and the source code is available if you would like to inspect it.

Yeah 7-Zip is the best. It handles pretty much any type of archive for extracting too so you don't need Winrar or anything.

7-zip here too. Never had a problem with it. Best: you can decide, from where in the folder hirachy you start unzipping.

Most of the "free" options that come with all of the extra software, toolbars, etc. use 7-Zip under the hood anyway.

Why not just use the one that is built into windows? Or maybe you are not on windows?

I used to use a paid version of Winzip and then one day they happily told me there was an update. I went to install it, and I noticed a large paragraph of text  on one of the pages that I was suppose to click through. I was about to click accept when I decided to read what all this text was all about. I saw that along with Winzip, it was going to install MySearchDial and it was going to add a toolbar and change my homepage. I said (to myself) but what if I don't want my home page changed. I didn't see any place to uncheck those proposed changes. So I cancelled the install. I then searched the web and I saw the MySearchDial was at best a PUP (potentially unwanted program) and at worst a virus. I then contacted Winzip and asked they why they were trying to install PUP/Virus along with Winzip. They wrote back and said it was a bonus software, but they immediately provided a link where I could download and install Winzip without the "features." But by that point, I no longer trusted them. I disabled Winzip from doing any updates and I would have completely uninstalled it. But I knew that when you install Winzip that it disables the built in windows zip extractor. I wasn't sure if it would be re-enabled if I removed Winzip, so I left it until I got a new machine and I've only used the windows extractor ever since. Not sure if it will zip things though. And it won't open rar files, if you need that, as far as I know.

  • The built-in Windows zip tool has limitations (it was throwing a wobbly with soem daz packages that had zero byte placeholder files, for example). 7-Zip has yet to show any sifgn of installing anything other than itself, and is free.

I use 7-zip for a daily-driver and gzip -n to re-zip duf files after I unzip and edit them in text format. You don't really need to re-zip text-dufs though, just be sure they have a 'duf' file extension.

If you do re-zip a duf, using most common zip-archivers puts a 'PK' binary signature at the start of the file and that may be enough to glitch a load. DS archived dufs have a 1F 8B 08 (hex) binary signature and that's what gizip -n (switch-n) puts on your re-zipped duf file - just a heads up in case you care about such stuff.

In Daz Studio, go to "Window > Panes (Tabs) > Batch Convert"

That will bring up the batch convert tab.  It will allow you to batch compress and decompress any duf file so you can manually edit it.  No need to worry about glitches either.

  • Many thanks, Matty, this will save a lot of manual fiddling!

Also 7zip has some badass compression if you use LMZA2 on ultra. I have seen products that are around a GB compress to under 300 MB before when I am archiving my rearranged stuff.

For 10+ years or so, I've been on Windows and use WinRAR from RARLAB. It's the format I use for SKYRIM models.
