i don't understand why the space station doesn't fall down ... consequently, if there really is no gravity at the space station, why doesn't it float away? how can you have it both ways? how far is it from the space station's orbit to the moon's orbit? lucky they aren't bumping into each other up there, or is it? how long has the moon been hanging around up there? more than a million years?

Gravity sucks. All objects have gravity. A particular object's gravity plus the sum of all other objects in the universe gravity sucks a groove in space time, like grooves on a vinyl record. The object rolls along its groove like a needle on a playhead. You can work out where the groove is using math, and place an object like the space station in a groove appropriate to where you want it to be.

    Huh?
I'm not sure what you said is incorrect, but being an Idiot™ myself, I found the answer at this link easier for my tiny brain to grasp.

i installed my DS (except the appdata) to a hard drive partition. haven't had permissions woes, crossXfingers

i'd move the appdata folder too to the logical drive, if there was a way to tell ds where to find it?

I've decided on this weeks 3D project: figure out how to get a tatt on Vicky in DS 4.6 BETA! :ahhh:

I have Poser python scripts and Advanced Shaders that do well in PPro 2012.. but never tried it in DS. Should keep me busy for a while. :)

Create a transparent .png showing what you want, then pick the surface where you want to apply it, and use the menu to go to Layered Image Editor and arrange your piccy over skin. Remember! Split at the back, and scalp is in two surfaces. Other than that, it should be easy.

Sounds pretty simple. I have a number of pngs with transparency I can play with, I suspect I just need "air time" to figure out best practices.

    Thanks! :cheese:

    KK:

Log file is in C:\Users\You\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio 4, along with saved layouts and all the other stuff that was in Documents and settings...Application Data under XP. There's also a Studio 3 folder for DS3.

Your content, by default, goes in \DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library in your Documents folder (C:\Users\You\Documents) for DS4 and to \DAZ 3D\Studio 3\Content for DS3.

Your applications will be in C:\Program Files (64 bit) or C:\Programme Files (x86) (32 bit).

Most of the folders you list don't exist on Vista and later, applications never should have had hard-coded paths to them (after all, several included the suer name and so varied from system to system) but used and use environment variables to obtain the correct location for the system.

...so one of my questions is, why is there also a locked folder icon named "Application Data" (where the Daz logfiles in XP were routed), and again, as I am the admin on my own system, why is it (and other folders) locked out at all (giving a "Access Denied" error when clicked on)? In my view, this is just bad coding, it's not like I'm going to sabotage my own system I spent all these months and hard earned money to design and build. There has to be a switch or command somewhere to "unlock" these.

...next, I have been told that nothing for Daz Studio should end up in the Programme Files folders in Win7. However, all the "built in" Omnifreaker and Shader content installed there, which as I am also told, is what is most likely contributing to 4.5 hanging up when I am working in or transferring to/from the Surfaces tab. I didn't manually route that content there, it had to be the installers. All of the purchased/free content I manually installed is on the D Runtime drive (the DIM would not work with my content archives as it required me to re download everything I purchased in the last five years to populate its database - a task that with my poor connection would have been more of a nightmare to deal with considering all the network timeouts and connection resets that occur which would result in a lot of corrupted installers) .

So when I uninstall/reinstall, how can I guarantee that all built in content doesn't get routed to the Programme Files folder again? When I initially installed both 3A and 4.5 on the system I let it use the "factory" default install paths which should have been the correct ones for all the components. This is why I am considering installing the apps to the C:/root as I have them on my notebook.

This also brings up the next question...

Why was the application split up like this in the first place? Before ver 3.x, Daz Studio simply installed to Programme Files. From my interpretation "My Documents" should be for items like Word .doc and Excel .xls files which are actual "documents", just like "My Pictures" or "My Videos" is for downloaded/user created images and vid files. Likewise, programmes and applications should "logically" go to the Programme Files folder with any associated data files to the Application Data folder.

3D content is no more a "document" than a .wmv file is a "programme". It is a set of calculations arranged to create an object that can exist in a virtual 3 dimensional space within the bounds of a specific CG application. It by itself cannot be used to produce a readily "readable" printed form (a hardcopy "document") like a text file or spreadsheet can without extensive processing and manipulation (e.g. morphing), within said 3D application, and as part of a scene combined with other 3D content that is then rendered into a 2D format which can finally be printed (using a 2D programme or utility) as a .jpg, .tif, or .png on a photo printer.

...thank heaven I don't have to go through all that to simply print my resume which I composed in Word.

A bit ridiculous, yes, but it seems that in this case (concerning both Daz and MS), more effort has been placed into making things more complex (and clumsy) than they need to be.

Stupid Genesis question: if I get the V5/M5/A5 kits for Genesis, can I use my old Gen4 clothing with them?

I'm assuming V4/M4/A4 characters won't work on Genesis figures...

Yes, DS4.5P has autofit built in, which will convert most Gen4 clothing. Gen 4 textures also work on Genesis. For Gen4 morph you need GenX.

The days of putting everything in a single folder ended with Windows 95; it's just that Windows didn't enforce it until Vista.

Calling the folder "My Documents" is somewhat confusing -- it should really be thought of as "My Data".

And you DO have to go through the same thing with your resume composed in Word. Try printing it out if you don't have a word processing program which reads Word format.

Ok, cool. I'm working in both Poser and DS now, I have a Poser-only runtime and I'm constructing a DS-only one as well.. so I'm not really too worried about using Genesis in Poser.

Running off to load up my Daz wishlist.. again.. :red: :red:

There are some monster morphs I want for Genesis that I can't find Gen4 equivalents of, which is what brought all this on.

...to autofit your Gen4 clothing you need the Gen4 Body shapes for Genesis. There are a couple bundles available one that has all the Gen4 the other all the Gen3 figures. If you are just looking to use Vicky, Michael, and Aiko the V4/M4 and A3/H3 body shapes will do.

    I have D3, A3, H3, V4, M4, and S4 for Genesis.

To transfer Gen4 morphs to Genesis (including custom and character morph sets) you need the GenX plugin.

The Gen5 characters are not all that necessary unless you actually want to use them. The only ones I'd suggest are the YoungTeens5, as this is the first revision since Laura and Luke which were Gen3 characters, and the Troll. Pretty much all Gen5 clothing content will work with Genesis without the actual Gen5 figures.

Ah, thanks! Good to know.

I saw the package that will give me Gen4 and Gen3 figures out of Genesis, they're wishisted now. I'll have to go add the young teens into the list as well.

Argh, wishlist bloat!  :ahhh:

...though it still isn't quite as involved since I don't need to "render" a textfile first to create a properly formatted version (that can be done on the fly in Word), and it doesn't require a second application (as well as a special printer) to actually print it.

The more and more I see how ridiculous this is becoming, the more I regret not having just purchased XP Pro 64 when it still was available and somewhat affordable.

The Gen4 and Gen3 shapes are nice to have though, because it allows you "dial-in" those shapes without actually having to buy the stand-alone characters.
Genesis shapes for David 3 and Stephanie 4 are also available. I'm probably forgetting some others.

To have those base shapes as part of the Genesis gene pool, and to have a matching base shape for using GenX.
