Viking longhouse and boats

I am looking for a Viking longhouse that would be appropriate for a single family to live in, with both an exterior and interior. Furniture would also be nice. I have found buildings that are appropriate for lords or have exteriors only, but none for a single family or small household.

There are lots of longships available, but none of the other types of viking ships and boats. The two I would be most interested in are the knarr and the faering. The knarr is a long range ocean going transport and cargo ship which was used for colonizing Iceland and Greenland, as well as for trade. The faering is a smaller boat for 1-3 people with two sets of oars and a square sail that is used for fishing and transportation.

Ideally, these items would support 3DL as well as Iray. It would be ironic if someone made them, but in a format I couldn't use, lol.

Almost forgot, a viking helmet, without horns, would also be nice. https://www.daz3d.com/helms-of-history-for-genesis-2-male-s

Have you checked out the "Build your own bundle" sale? Viking boats are there, as well as https://www.daz3d.com/house-of-mog-ruith and it's various add ons, which can look like a longhouse, though more ornate than your examples.

I have the longship, House of Mog-Ruith, and bought the viking clothes. The House of Mog-Ruith is a little strange with an open back wall, but if you load two of them, delete their back walls, turn one 180 degrees, and offset them both by 511.5 on the Z axis, you can get a large longhouse suitable for a lord. The longship was a warship, but the knarr was made for transporting goods and people. It would be like using a battleship as a cargo ship.

Faveral has a great viking village in his store: https://www.daz3d.com/viking-village-bundle

Do the buildings in the set have textured interiors? I really like Faverals work and have bought several of his products, but they generally don't have interiors. If this set does have working doors and textured interiors, I will put it back in my wishlist.

They don't, which isn't surprising considering the size of the product. You will find in most cases it's interior OR exterior at DAZ not both. The basic walls are there and you could probably furnish it yourself if needed.

That's what I thought. I think it's unfortuate, but understandable, that PAs make either exteriors or interiors but not both. When I find a product with both, I make sure to buy it to support that vendor. I also appreciate seperate interrior and extrior sets for the same building, like with Mog-Ruith and Mog-Ruith Interior. I suppose that if all else fails, my next project could be to learn modeling, but I am still working on understanding lighting and surfaces/shaders.

I was wondering about whether the Hall in https://www.daz3d.com/saxon-settlement-by-merlin could be used as a longhouse, or if I could hide the rear walls of two Huts and put them back to back. It's in my wishlist, but not in this months budget, so I will check it out in a month or two.

Edit: I find Faveral's Viking Village to be frustrating because it comes so close to what I am looking for, but doesn't quite do what I need. For example, the lack of interiors for the buildings. There is a boat in the props pack which is close enough to a faering, but it doesn't have a mast/sail, oars, or blocks to brace oars against. It is almost tempting to get for just the surrounding walls, smithy, and the docks. If someone were to make an interior set for it, I would probably buy it. While there are 25 houses, there only seem to be 4 types of house plus the church and hall that would need interiors.

  • Well, as for the blocks to brace the oars against, I suppose one could make prims and link them to the boat to work as blocks for the oars.

Drakkors oars can't be resized, and they load in 20 at a time. However, it should be possible to use the oars from https://www.daz3d.com/old-rowboat or https://www.daz3d.com/jolly-boat with the primitives to make a useable faering type boat. It will be a little expensive, but by kit-bashing the Saxon Settlement and Viking Village I should be able to get close to what I was looking for.

Thank you to everyone who offerred sugestions.

  • the lovely thing about boats is there are lots of plans on the internet

googling faering etc yielded piles of images

if you want to learn to model a boat is a great thing to start with.

  • one can start by tracing out all the bits and extruding, triangulating ngons in Wings3D etc and virtually assembling them,  enlightened
