I am an equal opportunity pet owner lol.  I love both and have had both dogs and cats at the same time for most of my life.  My cat is now 17 I think?  And our Aussie is heading for 14.  Once the cat is gone we have decided to just do a dog, simply because we want to start camping and travelling a bit more, and its far easier to take a dog with us than it is to take a cat.  And its not fair to the cat to be left at home for 4 or 5 days at a time with no one to cuddle with. Its not an issue now as my duaghter still lives at home but she just graduated from college and got a good job, and is planning on buying a house this summer.  So we will be empty nesters with no one to stay home and cuddle a new kitten.  I won't do that to an animal.  So once Ella is gone (hoping for at least another year with her since her daddy lived well past his expected lifespan and she is still in really good shape), we will most likely get a puppy and that will be it for us once Dragon is gone.

Speaking of ferals, people drop cats off behind our office building all the time (there are open fields with lots of brush and trees and then farther back a large area of more forest land).  We currently have a full blood siamese female, two of her kittens who will be a year old soon (the third one died several months ago) a big male tiger stripe, a small black female, and a couple others who stay more hidden. Someone in the building put out food and water for them every day, I put out a large plastic container (cut an access hole one side and then on the other side as well on the opposite side so they wouldn't be trapped if something came after them) and put a heavy duty, tightly woven blanket in it so they would have somewhere warmer to sleep.  Its clear plastic so it helps it warm up when the sun shines.  Went out the other day to check on them and someone had built them a beautiful wooden box and covered it in straw.  Kind of restored my faith in humanity a little lol.

I've been trying to find a vet or shelter that would spay them for free. We would spay/neuter then release them back.

Both are nice, but I like Danny better across the board probably because she has more delicate features (especially face shape, eyebrows, nose).

  • RGcincyRGcincy Posts: 2,834

    They are very similar.

Eyebrows:  Danny, narrower and seem thicker
Eyes: maybe Danny as the lower outside edges have a broader sweep
    Nose: Danny
    Mouth: tie
Face Shape: Duffy, more pronounced chin, more visible ears

    Danny = 3, Duffy = 1
    Score using soccer point system: win = 3, tie = 1): Danny = 10, Duffy = 4

I've got a fun one of Danny coming up. I do really like her. The lighting is the Pro-Studio, light 14R.

P3D Danny for Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 Female       dForce Nimble Elf Outfit for Genesis 8 Female(s)

Okay, the Olive Hair (Gen8F) Product page says 3DL but in Studio it says 3DL and Iray. I used Slosh's shader on it, so this isn't the default hair color/shine. One thing I didn't like- although, as usual, SWAM has wonderful and abundant morphs, why no morph (unless I missed it) for the volume just at the top of the head? Reducing the sides, but having to leave the top at that volume, just doesn't make sense. If you go in to the Correctives, you can use other figures, which reduces the volume, but it messes up the hair part. So if anyone finds a top of the head volume, feel free to mention it.

I don't dForce, so anything you see is just the basic out of the box. One of these days I'll learn it, but it's also good that the default is shown.

Tip: I've mentioned this before, instead of doing DOF for backgrounds, if you have a background image, Gaussian Blur it, then put a light color over it (light gray) if the colors are really intense.

I ended up getting the dForce Swim Shorts (Gen8M) for 76% off. Paid $3.07 because I used my DO coupon for the PC+.  Can't believe it's the end of January already!!!

Kagiso for Genesis 8 Male     Terran Hair for Genesis 3 and 8 Male(s)   (wardrobe: none)

Kagiso had a few issues with the colors in skin settings for Translucency on some of the presets. There was an update today, but the face presets are still wrong. I'm going to assume there was a miscommunication to the vendor, and these will also be corrected soon. This is Kagiso with the intended settings, though I did use two morphs on him that should be disclosed: The "Eye Realism HD" morph from Tyrone, (for Darius 8,) and the Crow's Feet morph, from whatever, (probably the Head morphs from Daz.) I modified the heck out of the settings on the Terran Hair, too. The teeth have the Soft Wax Plain shader from the Subsurface Workshop applied. (You can pretty much assume I've used that shader, if you can see teeth in my renders.) I also bumped up both the normal and bump maps on the teeth to 2, and lowered any glossy I could find. This close up, I was getting reflections on the teeth.

I'm also using the Boss Pro lighting, the third preset without any modification, and the purple backdrop.

Oopses on the skin settings aside, Kagiso has wonderful skin. I set the SubD to 4 on both Kagiso and the hair, and the detail in his skin is really beautiful. (James47, in the galleries, made the suggestion in a comment on one of his own images.) I don't know about those brows, though. I like them on the outer half, but the inner brow area seems odd to me. I've never seen anyone's eyebrows grow down that far. I may modify the face map in photoshop for future use, or go with the no-brow face and add Redz' fiber mesh brows. Also, for being so thick, the painted on look is obvious on his left brow in this pose: the inner brow and the side of his face where the ear is peeking out. Might be less obvious if the left ear was hidden, with the dark background there.

Very nice! i have to agree with that inner brow looking weird. I don't like it at all. Teeth color and texture looks really good, I love your tweaks. Skin is awesome!

I read somewhere a couple months ago about using a wax shader on hair, but hadn't tried it. Wonder what it would do.

I don't know which wax shader they were using, but the wax shaders I have, from the Subsurface Workshop, Khory's Neutral Shaders, and IG's Light and Candles, aren't producing a realistic result. Except for IG's black wax shader, everything I tried cause the hair to go white. IG's shader was interesting and it didn't make the color change to white. It still didn't look quite like hair, though. I tried applying with and without replacing images.

That's not an extensive list of wax shaders. I didn't try any of the included shaders and I'm sure there are other products available I don't have. But my experiments lead me to think a wax shader isn't the answer. At least on Terran Hair.

I never heard of using a wax shader on hair. Is that for transmapped hair or fiber hair?

  • I think people suggest using a wax shader on hair when what they really just want to do is add translucency.

It might have been for fiber hair... I know it wasn't working on Terran Hair, which is transmapped.

I can see why someone would think that...

I know I was looking for high sheen and I never did get the "jheri curl" look I was trying for.

I've never tried wax shaders on hair, but I've tried silk shaders (specifically the "silk/keep maps" option from one of Parrotdolphin's sets) with okayish results.

What aspects do you like about each one? Let's do a little poll here. Pick one or the other for each default characteristic:

    Eyebrows
Eyes (I tried to get colors that were almost the same)
    Nose
    Mouth
    Face Shape

    Hi,

    Eyebrows - I prefer Duffy
    Eyes - I prefer Danny
    Nose - I prefer Danny
    Mouth - I prefer Danny
Face Shape - I prefer Danny

Overall the only thing I don't like about Danny is her eyebrows. I too like thicker brows on characters and I don't think Duffy's brows would overpower Danny's more delicate features smiley

I loaded up a fiber mesh hair, Mec4D's Mullet for G2M freebie, and gave it go. Meh. Still makes the hair look fake and too transparent in places, imo. I'm going to go tinker with Stryker now...
    smiley

ETA: OMG... Stryker is really nice. I posted a wip in my wip thread, just a quick pose and default lighting... and he stills looks fantastic! Dare I say I'm getting excited about... um... tinkering with Stryker. (Tinkering with. Yeah, that sounds a lot better than playing with... lol)

Well, I Googled and I found one reference  to the wax shaders. Kept looking and finally found the post that I was referring to. Some interesting tips as it's a summary. (How's that for too much information LOL?)

I mixed Kagiso for G8M, Tyrone for Darius 8, and the Ray dial from 200 Plus Head and Face Morphs for this character. I tweaked the Kagiso skin to my liking and added the acne overlay from the LY Glitter Sweet Girls for Growing Up for Genesis 8 Female(s). I used the free OnFleek eyebrows for G8F the AprilYSH gifted us at Christmas. I brightened it and adjusted contrast in Photoshop, because my render was a little flat looking.

All that work. That turned out excellent skin looks nice as well

I'm having a problem with Bella Bleu's nails. They are custom long nails and there seems to be no way to dial them down... Anyone have a solution to this? The nails longer morph in reverse does not work...

Here is Karyssa with Growing Up morphs, the elf outfit, waif hair and a HDRI from HDRIhaven.com which has tons of free HDRI's! I played with all the surface setting, adding metallic flakes to everything, although it's not obvious...

@barbult  Have to agree, that's a lot of work- and worth it. I just want to know how your brain starts ticking off all the things you're going to do. Do you start with a plan or just come up with all these things as you go? It's amazing to see what combination of approaches you use.

@astracadia  LOL, so true. And I've discovered Lily has another endearing trait-  toilet paper shredder. Definitely not safe on the holder, she loves to spin and shred.  I had to laugh because she was sprawled out in the middle of the bedroom floor, with shreads of toilet paper all over the room.

@wonderland   Sorry, I haven't tried Bella Bleu yet. Hopefully someone will know. Karyssa looks adorable, very coy.

I prefer smaller cuddly dogs personally. I do like cats but I can’t afford both and dogs are more companionable and they can be very loving and cuddly. So can cats but my last one we got at the pound didn’t really warm up to people. I’m afraid to try another cat since I can really only invest in a single pet. And I don’t believe in returning or giving up animals.

yeah you're right. I can't get those nails back to default short ones either. They load when you "inject" the body morph. I tried removing the parameters from the normal nails length and going backward but they deform horribly when doing that.

Hey, have any of you ever tried to do a render with a camera half above and half below the water line? I'm trying right now and I can either get right above the surface or right below it, but I can't get both at the same time.

This particular water plane reflects completely so you can't see anything below the water line if you're above it, or above the water line if you're below it - which isn't the effect I am after.

    You can't.

Daz cameras take their pictures from a single point in space. They can't be "half above and half below" so if you want this effect you're going to have to fake it.

Frame your picture how you want it, then make two renders. Move the water level so that one render is fully under the water, the other is fully above it. Combine the two images in post, and use one of Ron's Waterline brushes to cover the seam. A little bit of blur on the "under" image helps sell the effect. The end result can be alarmingly realistic!

[Added: I've attached my under and over the water images too. I think I must have reposed her head slightly between the two renders, but as it was well away from the intended waterline it didn't matter. Also, btw, the water in this case is a solid cube of iray water, rather than just a surface plane]

P3D Patricia For Victoria 7    Belle Tails (Gen3/8)     Betty Outfit (Gen3F)

Here's another P3Designs gal. I wanted to show you her teeth, they are realistic as they vary nicely. The brown line of the bottom lip I'm getting here varies with different lights. We've discussed this before regarding lips fading into surrounding skin, and lips do vary. You're going to get different results depending on the lighting, so this is one to watch for and definitely test some light sets to get the look you want.

Her skin is quite lovely, that sheen comes as the default, no metallicity added. I think Patricia has the perfect level of bump on her lips. The lines look very natural.

The hair has nice "thicken" options for the tails, and many movement morphs. It's a fun, messy, casual hair and good for adults and kids. The bands come in many colors, it wasn't hard to match them to the outfit color. @swam  You have the wrong name for the hair for the folder name! You have it as BellaTails.

The Betty Outfit is one which has several material options. Tired of outfits having only one, then having to buy other materials. I just use shaders for the most part when that happens. But I'm more likely to buy an outfit when it has multiple choices of materials.

Patricia is one of my favorite characters and she does have great skin.  She reminds me of actress Phoebe Tonkin.
