Challenge and contest (with prizes): 101 use for Coffinus Mundanus
![Kattey](https://farnsworth-prod.uc.r.appspot.com/forums/uploads/userpics/796/nYB4VJS5CPMBU.jpg)
Hello everyone.
I wish to make a bit of contest. The idea of this contest is to use a coffin (the one that used for dead bodies) for some unusual purpose and/or in a creative way, be it storing your apples, painting it blue, or using it as a part of time machine. I'm finding that with abundance of those props around I very rarely see them used and even more rarely in some different way.
So just do something with it. It can be fun, it can be somber, - this is up to you, but the coffin should not be used for its primary purpose of storing human-like bodies (dead or live or undead) in them. But you can put a giraffe in, if you wish so. Even if it is undead giraffe.
There is plenty of props around, both free and commercial, such as this one or this one but you can do a bit of search and come with another twenty on ShareCG (both Poser and 3D object sections), DAZ3D or other stores
And if somebody used similar idea, don't worry and do your own, because aside of creative use of coffin I'd also like to encourage you to tell a little story with your picture about how exactly the coffin ended up in such situation or what the situation is :)
You can enter as many times as you wish but only one of each person's pictures could be a winner.
Any rendering application goes (DS, Poser, Carrara, Bryce, Vue, with Octane or Lux), as well as traditional or digital art, but please, specify what you used. Postwork is ok.
The contest will end in two weeks, May 10th, 2013, at 11:59PM EDT.
The prizes will be $15 in gift certificates of your choice from DS, Renderosity or RDNA, two runner ups will get $7 of the same thing and you can always submit something just in a spirit of challenge (with a note that you do so), if you wish.
Good luck and I'm waiting to see your renders :)

Just as a really useless item of information - the word 'coffin' once had a more general use, referring to any box (e.g., a wooden chest for clothes or whatever). 16th-century recipe books sometimes refer to cooking something in a 'coffin', which was a box-shaped shell of hard (and probably nearly inedible) pastry. It makes somewhat alarming reading, sort of Addams-familyish cookery.
Yeah, and I think "coffers" still used as a word for "box with treasure" sort of thing, but I mean rather what coffin is now.
coffee keeps you out the coffin
Can a coffin be a coffee machine?
Same thing with the word "casket." Aside from being synonymous with "coffin" it means a small ornamental box or chest for storing things of value. Hence, keeping loved ones in a casket, the fancier the better.
While the Cows are preparing their entry, here's one for Wendy
If entries are limited to one per person, the Cow's entry will supersede this one!
Nice one, Sockratease :)
I've added a clarification that you can enter as many times as you wish but only one of your pictures can be a winner.
Thanks, Kattey.
Actually, since the contest is called 101 Uses For Coffinus Mundanus, perhaps entries should be limited to 101?
No more.
No less!
Everybody must enter 101 renders to qualify
It'd save money on prizes...
The name of the topic is a tribute to "101 uses of "Stone to Flesh" potion" which also was an inspiration for the theme :)
Ohh, a weird usage contest, I'm in!
Yay! :)
It looks like undertaker David will win the Coffin Canoe Regatta this year too.
"It's not the cough
that carries you off,
it's the coffin
they carry you off in" :)
Heh, thank you, Totte :)
And I like how they pad with shovels :D
...I love these "think out of the box" (ouch) challenges.
Oh yes, the shovels. Great touch!
Just had to do this one ;-)
:) Some of cars are called "coffin on wheels" but this guy is taking this definition to a new level!
That reminded me of a song in Swedish though that is almost impossible to translate as it's a weird play with words and rhymes, but I have to give it a try,
I'm an undertaker, I work for the dead. A nice undertaker, I nod my head.
With a modern funeral in racer style, and everyone are dead when we arrive.
My car is not like your car, it's a hearse.
For me, the are no green men, yellow or red men, for me there's only dead men, and women. Muhahaha ..
Clip on youtube
Don't ask me why this is the idea that immediately popped into my mind...
Title: Rub a Dub Dub...
A walk in the park, a step in the dark ... :-):-)
Yay, renders! :)
TheWheelMan, she looks like she enjoys her bath a lot :)
Kalisx, it is very cute in a very skeleton way :)

This idea took awhile to come up with. But, here goes...
Here's my entry, "Crazy Igor's coffitron".
(Crazy Igor apparently didn't live near a hardware store, and must have been a sucker for the 2-for-1 sales at the local mortuary.)
Aside from shaders and lights, every single one of the 101 items in this scene is either a coffin or a piece of a coffin (pieces include the pillow, a handrail, a coffin lid, and a strip of cloth draped over the top, which when resized makes a surprisingly good electrical cable.)
I didn't initially intend to have 101 of them in there, but by the time I was happy with added detail, it turned out I was only 8 short, so I went ahead and added 8 more bits for the humor value.
While they're not realistic or anything, I'm pretty happy with how well a coffin can be turned into a vacuum tube; a little bit of transparency, some ambient lighting on the rim of the base and/or hinges, a dark corner and a PointLight and you're good to go.
I saw the contest, decided to try my hand at it and went searching for freebie coffins, and got several. When I went to install them I realized I already HAD a bunch for some reason. Now I have SIX coffins in my content library I don't know what to do with next... thanks a lot guys... sheesh. :-)
Thank you for new entries, Zawarkal and Sean Riesch :)
And there is a reminder for everybody who wants to submit something that there are only few days left until the end of the contest ;)
Sean, that's amazing!
My entry: "Secret Weapon"
Techniques/Software Used: this started as a DS3 render but was postworked in Filterforge and Paint.net
Storyline: When you're a drifter in the Wild West, you need something to give you an edge in a gunfight...and someplace to hide it too.
(Inspired by the spaghetti western Django, where the main character hauls a Mittrailleuse machine gun and ammo around in a coffin.)
@Odaa, thanks!
Does anybody know if there is there a thread in the commons somewhere specifically to announce new contests, that people could add to with new contests as they are announced and people can subscribe to it to know when and where the contests are, sort of like the freebies thread? If not, I wonder if it would be worth starting.
Sean your image is really cool. And this sounds like a great idea about the contest announcement thread. It could be like one of those threads where no comments are allowed just postings with links to a contest. That way if you subscribe to the thread by email you only get the email when a new contest is added. You might check with Chohole.
I'm loving this thread--great ideas and images!
Sockratease, hilarious concept, and I like it even better for how subtle it is, set off to the side in that pretty room. Love the lighting.
Totte, the Farsidey caption on your first image totally cracked me up, and the people's expressions are priceless. And the shovels! And the undertaker hat! The go-cart's great too, and the squirrel makes it awesome. (Is he controlling the cart with his deluxe acorn remote?) (The motion blur's also very cool, and I like the little bounce in the rear left tire.)
TheWheelMan, yours is so beautifully creepy, and the coppery-earthy texturing is yummy.
Kalisx, the smoothness and the colors and light of your walk in the park are really beautiful. Which makes the visual joke even better. Love it.
Zawarkal, cool! The bodies in the escape pods look great, and I love the different ways you used the coffin shape.
Sean Riesch, that is 101 kinds of awesome.
Odaa, love the coloring and the rakish pose, and how the coffin blends into the landscape for an extra effective hiding place.
Delightful contest, Kattey!
Just a friendly reminder that the contest will end tomorrow, Friday, May 10th, 2013, at 11:59PM EDT and you still have about two days to submit your picture ;)
Odaa, very classic image, I extremely like that somebody remembers westerns too :)
Thank you, Cuisle!
