Mesh smoothing shutting down DS

Several times, when I've had clothing items using mesh smoothing, DS has either locked up/become almost entirely unresponsive/shut down after a while with no warning.
Could this be a problem with certain models, or just a sign that my old computer - which can only use DS at a basic level - is struggling?

Smoothing is certainly demanding, and you may want to switch it off while posing and turn it back on only at the end for tweaking and rendering. You can do that via the Parameters pane, in the Mesh Smoothing group of controls.

Some newer items have the "Interactive Update" turned on, turn that off. Even my machine that is not old crawls to halt when that is turned on. Check for that first.

Daz as any software has bugs/glitches. Report to tech dept. My system is fairly new. In my case, V4.2 character renders crash my system occassionally, while Genesis works a charm, never fails. I constantly save V4.2 character build. All my difficulty has been with V4.2,.

TBH nothing should come with the smoothing modifier already active, because if done correctly the content shouldn't need it for normal posing. I've already had to reshape the mesh on a couple of freebies, the smoothing was being used to hide that the mesh didn't fit the default Genesis shape or T pose, I can put up with that in a freebie but if I ever found that in a paid for product then the vendor would get hung by their "testimonials".

Thanks for the replies. I think Mesh Smoothing will be a last resort for me in future, better to hide body parts and so on.
As for the Interactive Updates, I've never really looked at that, but I will from now on. Although I've no idea what it really does!

What irt does is that it smoothes all the time, as soon as you move or pose, during pose and not when you release, which makes it a performance hog, specially on some systems, while it works well on others.
