Iray renders seems to be too slow

I remember previous version of daz had iray renders being extremely fast. But now it seems to take a lot of time for small scene. Is there anyway to get it faster.

I am on 12gb ram wwith gtx 660. I5 3.3ghz

  • Are you using the CPU + GPU? Were you using both previously? Are you using larger textures than before? What about OptiX acceleration?

    Small scenes do not always mean fast renders, it depends on the content complexity, which is more of a buffer issue than a filesize issue.

    Are you using the same GPU drivers as you did when it was faster? The latest drivers may not be the best option here.

  • I have tried all cpu+gpu, just cpu/gpu doesnt seem to make much difference. I dont remeber wat i was using previously. But i didnt changed anything and was just using default settings. I dont know about textures and optic accln. Ascene with just 1 char and some backwalls is taking lot of time to render

  • GTX 660 only has 2 GB VRAM. Best bet is you are exceeding the limit with this scene. What does the log file say about the scene size?

  • Too many variables.

    it could simply be the shader settings of the character, high translucency, SSS, etc.

    It could be your lighting setup.

    it could be the render size.

    it could be other stuff running in the background, check task manager.

    it could be thermal throttling, check and clean your heatsink, you may also need to replace the thermal paste.

    it could be.....

     

    i could go on but that's just a few items.

    without a benchmark definition, i.e. this render used to take x time, but now takes y time, there's just no way to give any accurate solution.

     

    the only way to really troubleshoot this kind of issue is to setup a scene that is compatible with previous versions of daz studio and uninstall and reinstall the previous version and render the same scene in the various versions to determine if there is actually a difference.

     

     

  • 1st file took me 2 mins to render. After adding a room it took me 1hr to render.

    I used cpu+gpu and optimiz accln.

    Anyway to speed 2nd render

    More powah!

    Mirrors and other reflective/shiny surfaces take a lot of time, as do bump/normal/displacement and transparency effects. You have all of those, on a GPU that has less than 1000 CUDA cores.

    Also, from what I've noticed, if you add stuff to a scene then take it out, it tends to stay in the VRAM. Get something like MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision X to monitor your card's memory usage and you'll see how just setting up a scene can eat up all your VRAM quickly. Once you get a scene set up and save it, then close DS and reopen that scene, your VRAM usage should have dropped since it wipes out things that are not actually being used. Like big textures.

     

    And yeah, 2GB of VRAM will also be eaten up quickly by IRay Shaders

    First render; light bounces about a bit, and quickly disappears into infinity.

    Second render; light bounces about, and keeps bouncing about - depending on settings.

    ... And as has been said, you have glossy and reflective surfaces.

    More textures will take up more space, and may cause the GPU to be dropped from the render. You think you used GPU, but you need to check to see if it was used. But even if it was was used, it is a long way from the best card to render with.

    Is the card used for display? If so, could you use on-board graphics for display, so you at least have a little more RAM available?
