DAZ 4.6 Upgrade

I have DAZ 4.5 and so I need the new 4.6 version as an upgrade only. In install Manager, it has downloaded updates for Genesis Starter Essentials, and the subsurface shader base. Is this the update, or do I need to install DAZ Studio 4.6 as well?

    You need to download DS 4.6 as well

    As it is the program and not content you have to download it from your "Product Library" adn not with the DIM as that is for content only

    OK, fine. But then in my product library I have a load of other files. Do I need them or are they already included in DAZ 4.6? Some are inactive, so i assume I don't need those. But what about Content Crteator Toolkit, FBX exporter, Texture Atlas and 3D Bridge for Photoshop? I think I already have those in DAZ 4.5 - do I need to download them again? I believe Decimator is some sort of trial version, isn't it? So presumably I don't need that.

    Decimator has to be purchased if you have only ever had the free DS4 Pro, it's there for those of us who paid for it on launch. Photoshop and ZBrush bridges obviously need you to have the application they bridge to. The older versions will work, but the new ones may well have bug fixes.

    Do I need to uninstall DS 4.5 before I install DS 4.6? I've also bought a few plugins like Decimator and Look At My Hair. Will they all work with DS 4.6? I'm a bit worried that if I install DS 4.6 it might mess up my DS 4.5 installation of erase my content library. Have others upgraded without any problems?

    You can let the installer uninstall the old version. Your plugins will still work, though if there are updated versions you may as well grab them for any bug fixes they include.

    The CMS got a Update too. So stop it and Un-install it as well. Your database should be fine, (I'm going to back mine up first though).

    Only the database client was updated, so you don't have to uninstall CMS, that part hasn't been updated.

    The 3Delight render time has been improved. I think that alone makes it worth it, even if you have no interest in any of the other enhancements.

    Very much this. The other render engines seem to have been debugged too.

    How much faster is the render engine now? Has anyone compared render times using 4.5 and 4.6? I haven't installed the new version yet because I'm still working on some images for an important project for college and I can't take the risk of messing up my DAZ installation however unlikely that might be.

    Not noticeable but as mentioned Bugs are fixed for many users. OpenGL renders for fast Preview or Animation is one I enjoy now.

    I was working on a test image that took just over 18 min to render with 4.5. I takes 14 min with 4.6.

    I re-rendered one of the biggest scenes I made. That scene took about 3 hr 10 min in 4.5. It takes 2 hr and 25 min in 4.6. The RAM usage was about the same, 14 GB for DAZ process and 15.5 GB for system.

    I consider those improvements significant.

    All my renders are done with global shading rate at 0.2 and Pixel Samples X and Y at 16.

    Render times also depend a lot on how you do the lighting.

    I never use the UberEnviroment light.

    For the test scene I was talking about, I was using 3 UberArea Light planes, with one specular only spot to boost the specular. It was a skin tone test render with no hair. Render time would be much higher with any hair.

    The big scene had 12 V4/M4/V5/M5 character with clothes and hair (including some fiber mesh hair) plus some Lowrez characters (Lorenzo and Loretta LowRez) on a big set that included some transparency and reflection. There were no closeups of any of the characters. The lighting was all done with distant lights and linear point lights.

    In my comparison I was using exactly the same lighting with both 4.5 and 4.6, but your results may vary with different scenes and different kinds of lighting.

    Render settings close to same, I do use UE lots and I bet your PC rocks mine. But as we know UE is very render heavy. That you for the Info.
