Announcing the winners of Carrara Challenge #37 'Dungeons Deep'!
1st place: 'The Zen of a Warrior Princess' by UnifiedBrain:
2nd place: 'Treasure Guardian' by Dustrider:
3rd place: 'In Memorial' by Stezza:
4th place (tie): 'The Lost Train' by Varsel:
4th place (tie): 'Max had promised to do the washing up, even on Sundays.... but that didnt save him from.... The Crypt!' by Headwax:
Additionally, MatCreator has generously volunteered to sponsor this Challenge!
Here's his profile:
"Whats shakin' gang =)
Paris here, aka "MatCreator"... I got caught up in the wave of the home pc era in 1998, started using photos to create mats for Bryce ("mat"-creator =P), but have since incorporated Carrara, 3D Coat, ZBrush, and Hexagon into my digital arsenal... I'm just your average free-thinking creative individual, my esoteric digital surrealism is my extension of life, and when I am not pushing, pulling or painting voxels, I'm giving peace of mind to people who have been invaded by intruders of the worst kind....."
For those who don't know, MatCreator is one of the all-time great Carrara Published Artists who specializes in products for shaders and 3d brushes. You can find his Daz store here:
https://www.daz3d.com/matcreator
One of the first products I ever purchased when I first obtained Carrara was his Modular Urban Triplex: https://www.daz3d.com/cpm-modular-urban-triplex
It's a full interior house, with tons of included furniture, excellent shaders, render and atmosphere presets, and I highly recommend it.
More recently I've finally learned a bit about how to do 3d painting in Carrara (I never really realized what 3d painting was, or how useful it is, til I saw a recent youtube tutorial), and as a result I've learned how important it is to have a good selection of 3d brushes, and MatCreator's shader and 3d brush packs are invaluable in this regard, again I highly recommend them, here's a few he offers:
https://www.daz3d.com/mc-mmm-carrara
https://www.daz3d.com/carrara-pro-master-shaders
https://www.daz3d.com/carrara-pro-master-shader-brushes
Also (and this is a really cool coincidence) he is working on a new product, which is actually a Dungeon! Sadly this product hasn't yet been approved by Daz, so it's not available yet in the store, though hopefully soon it will get the green light and we can all expand our Dungeon Master toolkits :)

Title: "Cave Explorer"
Artist: Mark D. Olsen (MDO2010)
WIP Links:
Products Used:
Additional Notes:
The cave is made up of three terrains (ceiling, floor and wall) plus a plane for the water plus some additional ripples modeled in the vertex modeler. Rocks on the floor and water droplets on the ceiling were scattered with replicators. Fur on the rats and some additional stray hairs on the explorer are Carrara Dynamic Hair. The torch is a simple vertex cylinder and the flame is a Fire primitive with a bulb parented to it with some glow and lens flare effects.
The lighting is two low-powered spot lights, one off camera in front of the character and one off camera behind her, with most of the light coming from the bulb parented to the torch.
Textures for the cave were created in Filter Forge and Carrara.

Title: "The Dungeon"
Artist: Mark D. Olsen (MDO2010)
WIP Links:
Products Used:
Additional Notes:
A low poly dungeon. Except for the rats and the hands, everything was modeled and textured in Carrara. The walls, arch, stairs and floor are made up of simple vertex cubes with filleted edges just duplicated to build everything, with a mix of local and global procedural textures to add some apparent material variation.

Products Used:
"Bikini" (top and bottom) is from Bladerune for V4 (Rendo - no longer available)
The belt is from V4 Ranger
The gloves, quiver, and arrows are from Ranger Props for Genesis 2 Female(s)
The leggings are from the Callidora Outfit for G2F
The sword is from Elven Weapon Archer
The bow is from Horizon Redux for V4 (Rendo - no longer available)
The hair is Chrome Hair for G2F (RDNA/Aeon Soul - no longer available)
The dragon and texture are from the DAZ Dragon 3 Pro Bundle (got it in one of the sales where it was less than $10.00 .... woohoo)
The building interior is Fantasy Room Interior
The treasure chests, treasure, shield, weapons rack and assorted weapons are from various items available here at DAZ 3D
Additional Notes: The scene was completely set up in Carrara except for the dragon. For the dragon I applied the textures in DS, then save it and imported the DS scene into Carrara. All the materials/shaders (except for a couple of the building shaders that the detail was lost in DOF) were then set up for use in Octane Render (most of them looked pretty bad initially). I used a custom Glossy/Specular mix Octane shader on the dragon and the girl. The final image was rendered in Octane with some very minor post processing in Gimp (Levels, unsharp mask, and fog/dust).
Please zoom to full resolution of 2500x2500 to see the full shader effects and details!

Title: Fribians
Artist: Stezza
WIP Links:https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3186366/#Comment_3186366
Products Used: Magurgle from CGBytes
Additional Notes: Have you ever wondered what those little cave like holes were that you see on the creek and river banks...
well inside these little cave dwellings reside the Fribians... a cross between a fish and an anphibian... they are hard to spot in the open as they blend in with their environment, but within their little cave they go about their daily life of eating insects, fish and rotting corpses that may have come to grief in the river/creek..
I found they can be tempted by five day old raw prawns and if you are lucky you may catch one... but only at dusk time when the cicadas start to sing.... hence your chances of catching one happens only once every seven years for a short period during summertime.

Products Used:

M4 Beard
Noggins rats - one dead
Crypta
CP Skeleton
M4UrWPants
Additional Notes:
It's got three lights - two bulbs for the background elements (135percent but only 12 foot - medium sized scene) and a spotlight
For the spotlight - I put a photograph of some clouds in the gel and ticked 'used gel' in the light cone box
for post work I used waterelogue to get the watercolour look - drop result down quite a lot in the opacity because it screws up faces bigtime
I fine tuned contrast details and colour with Oloneohdr
I have it a warm bloom in photoshop elements with ... Opitikverve Labs Virtual Photographer
copied the whole lot and desaturated it because the guy's foot was now too red ( to keep saturation and contrast on the focal point)
then erased the centre of that desaturated layer to bring back some warmth in the middle
I ran this through Topaz Impression and dropedd the result down to about 8 percent opacity
hit his trousers with a noise parameter in the alpha channale and that made them less clean

Additional Notes:
At the end of WW2, when the Germans where retreating from Eastern Europe, a lot of art and treasure disappeared and was never found again. Including the famous Amber Rom ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amber_Room ).
During the war, there were built a lot of underground installations all over Europe, for research, as factories and as barracks. And they all had access to the railroad network.
