Urban Centaur - A technical challenge excercise

Long ago (9/15/2011 as a matter of fact) someone on dA started a contest for placing a centaur in an urban environment. That contest idea lead, 18 ish months, later to this result.

This was a technical challenge because of the sheer size and scope of the render. Please understand this was done as a SINGLE render. It was not composited in post work.

I made heavy use for the new grouping features in DS4.5 which allowed me to quickly and easily toggle entire sections on and off for visibility which kept the viewport usable.

The project was started 9/15/2011.
The main scene was saved in 25 revisions.
There were 61 sub-files created that were merged to create the main scene.
There were 42 in-progress renders saved.
The final render took approximately 3 hours on my machine.
The final scene file was over 300mb in size and I used over 12 GB of disk space for the entire project.
The final render was ~20MB in size as a PNG.
At peak, my machine used ~22GB of RAM to render this scene. It was rendered as a SINGLE pass with all items in the scene at the same
time.
There are ~26M verts in the scene.
There are 26 Gen4/Genesis figures in the scene.
3 milcats
3 mildogs
4 rats
5 crows
4 chickens
1 milhorse
Plants, Buildings, clothes, etc. beyond counting

You can find a larger version of the render on my dA page here: http://adamtls.deviantart.com/art/Urban-Centaur-372197828

There is only a minor amount of postwork performed on this image.

Even birds in the little gap of sky and chickens on the ground. What a great job!

I sort of watched it grow as it went. Was way fun. And the FULL render just rocks if you ask me.

Very interesting piece, and very well done. I like the Zebra texture on the Centaur. When I read the title, before seeing the picture itself, I was expecting to see somthing really off-the wall, like the centaur walking down the street of a modern metropolis, like New York, or something, all dressed up in "businesswear".

This is beyond words, honestly I cna't even find words. It's a GREAT render, well worth the time and give your computer a extra little pat for not going into strike during the process :)

Great work, man. It's making me tired just thinking about the amount of energy and patience it took to get this done with this level of detail.
