Organizing Poser content

I'd like to organize some of my content, seems like a lot of it ends up under My daz 3d library-Runtime-pose. Does that mean Poser? Someone told me you should leave textures where they are installed. Does this mean I can't make a sub directory with characters or clothing, everything is just lumped in there..I should be able to move the content to folders I create, right?

Pretty much anything in a Runtime folder is going to be Poser format. Daz Studio's formatting goes under the Daz Content folder directly. This is because Poser's directory structure begins with a folder named "Runtime", whereas Daz Studio knows to look for one named "Content", or "My Daz3D Library".
My Daz 3D Library>Runtime>Pose should not exist. It should be My Daz 3D Library>Runtime>Libraries>Pose, and these will be Poser-formatted pz2 pose files.
It is a good idea to leave textures where they are installed, because the saved preset file was saved with that path. You can put them elsewhere, you'll just be asked to locate them.
It's also a good idea to install all content to a large capacity hard drive, even if it's not the one Daz Studio is installed on. That way you know you have room for large textures. That keeps your textures and presets (figures, props, etc) that require them under the directory formatting DS knows to look for.
This is what my files look like:its confusing to have them all in this folder like that..I'm not sure how they are stored in Windows files to get them to look like this..
That's the Tree view. Try the List view so they scroll out to the side. Right-click on the Content Library pane tab and select List View so they scroll out to the side instead of straight down.
On the other hand, if you prefer the tree view and you're wanting each figure's main Character/People/Figures folder to have their associated Poses under that so you don't have to go to V4 to load her, then back out to Pose to load her poses, you can create a Pose folder in that folder in Windows and then copy those pose files there. That way when you go to Figures>V4, you also have Figures>V4>Poses.
You can do that with anything related to a given figure, as seen here:

CAVEAT: The following suggestion is ONLY true if you are ONLY using DAZ Studio. Poser does NOT like finding pose (pz2) files in the Figures folders and may ignore them causing you to lose content if you're also using Poser.
In my experience, if you're just moving the Poser format files (e.g. .cr2 or .pz2) that are in the sub-folders below ...\Content\Runtime\LIbraries you can rearrange the folders however you want. You want to leave everything in the other folders under ...\Content\Runtime exactly where they are though or geometry and/or textures might break.
For instance, I routinely move the Material "pose" files for an outfit from the ...\Content\Runtime\Libraries\Pose folder into a subfolder under the outfit in ...\Content\Runtime\Libraries\Figures folder structure.
Cool, wasn't sure how to get that side scroll view..thanks!
Yes, I only use Daz..and the pose directory is the one I'd like to organize..
When a "Product" is built,. the files (models texture maps,) etc are all biult to be installed into a specific folder system,. so that when you clik the icon for that product in your Library,. the program know where the files are located,. and can load the product.
when you move any of those files to a new location,. there's no way for the program to Automatically rebuild the linkages between the files in that product.
so the product does not load correctly, or at all,.
DS has a "categories" thing,.. where you can "Virtually" arrange content into things like (dresses, boots etc) or whatever names you want,.
this does not physically move or change any files in your library,. so your products wil still work
Hope it helps :)
Maybe I need to look into categories. Thanks!
I remember using categories and something happened to my install of Studio, requireing me to reinstall it. I had to do the categories from scratch again. Have they fixed that? or was that mess up just a fluke?
Just in case anyone finding this old thread has this question, the Userdata file under Runtime/support is your catagories DB, it's a good idea to back it up periodically, to another drive, thumb, sd card. Then if have a crash; you can recover your categories as of the date of your last save, which is alot better than rebuilding it from scratch.
