questions on setting up custom smart content

I was wondering if it is possible to set up my own custom smart content?  I am seeing how to make a product based on a file or add a file to that product.  What else would I need to know about making my smart content work the way I want. Can an item be in more than one product?

You have the same ability to set up "smart content" (metadata) as the individuals that work for Daz; you have the same exact toolset.

Being able to answer "the way I want" requires you to explain what that entails in order to better help you.

"Can an item be in more than one product?" Yes, an asset can exist as part of multiple products at the same time.

    Ooops was not clear

Maybe set up free figures like Decoco and Maya doll so they appear in the smart content?  Or how about have some Genesis 3 clothing/textures show up as an option for Genesis 8?  Basically last question is how to have outfits that can be autofit to the current figure show up?  or is it better to save the autofitted outfit instead?

Okay where is a tutorial on setting up smart content for non Daz3d items like Maya Doll or Decoco or other freebies or content from other stores like Content Paradise or Renderosity or etc?

I am back at organizing my conent folder/smart content for DS.  So can an item be part of more than one product?  How do I set up that a texure set will work with both Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 for example?

I am back at organizing my conent folder/smart content for DS.    How do I set up that a texure set will work with both Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 for example?

    http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/creating_content/packaging/tutorials/adding_metadata/start

This is explained in the section

    Link SceneID and Compatibility Base.

All the official figures provided by DAZ3D have allready set up both a Scene ID and a Compatibility base.

Therefore when you have a material preset with skin textures all you need to do is to assign the allready existing Compatibility Base of the figure to it so that the CMS knows when to show the preset in Smart Content when a specific figure generation is selected in the scene.

In the Content DB Editor you can set more than one Compatibility Base.

In your example of a skin material preset select the allready existing Compatibility Base entry for Genesis 3 female / male and Genesis 8 female / male

So can an item be part of more than one product?

I do not think so. A product in its narrow definition and use is the "package" that contains all the files that are distributed.

There are some right click short cuts like "Explore product". If a preset would be assigned to more than one product this would not work.

    To compare:

Categories: Use this to set up "Categories". This defines what kind of preset it is. prop, figures, materials, poses each have their own category.  Presets can be assigned to more than one category.

Side Note: If you do not want to dig deeper into the metadata system it is recommended to just use Categories to group together different types of presets in any way you like.

Compatibiltiy Base: Geometries like figures and propes are defined as a Compatibility Base. Material presets can work with multiple compatibiility bases.

Scene ID: Geometries like figures and props are assigned one Scene ID to identify them.

Product: A product is a specific combination of presets to load textures and geometries created by artists and distributed in a package called product.

Side Note: At the beginning I was confused why I need to assign both a Compatibility Base and a Scene ID. This seemed somewhat redundant.

However the Compatibility Base is assigned to a figure or geoemtry preset.

The Scene Id links the preset to the actually geometry file (.obj) etc that is selected in the scene.

Hope that information helps you get started.
