moving an object along the xy axis

hi,

i have a scene in which, when i move a character by using the x and y translate dials, the object does not move along the gridlines. this is very annoying. any way to kind of reset the character so that when i use the dials, it moves in accordance to the gridlines?

thanks

  • Create a new null and arent the item to that, then use the null to move it.

Put the character in a Null object and move that one.

You can also go into Tool Settings and choose one of several different coordinate systems - World, Local, etc. When the Move tool is selected, you'll see a bar with the various options.

That affects the viewport Gizmo but not the parameter sliders.

  • I think the OP meant X and Z. CAD programs use X,Y for forward/back and side-to-side. In DS and Poser, Y is Up and Down (though the gridlines persist in theory).

At any rate, select the Hip, 0 the Y rotation, and only use the main figure Y rotation. It's possible the pose preset you're using manipulated the X, Y, and Z rotation by the Hip as if it were a pre-Genesis figure, so you have to reset those. Unless you like digging through the bone tree to find the Hip because it reminds you of playing with V3 and Poser 20 years ago.

Can someone explain what a null object is please?

Actually, try a Group - make sure your figure is selected, then Create>New group, give it a name, and click Accept. The group will then be selected, and can be used to move along the axes (as long as you don't rotate it).

  • Thanks for that.  I'm not sure about groups yet. I'm still learning.  But what *is* a null object?

It is a placeholder node that you can manipulate in the Scene pane, parent objects to it, etc.  However unlike any other object, there is nothing in the viewport that it corresponds to, it's invisible.

  • Thanks for the expanation!

    Harry.
