DS without Iray

I have been using mostly Carrara, but seems the cards are set and it seems it is time to change moving foward. At the same time I switched to Mac (AMD not NVidia ) so should I attempt Iray with Processor only, I own Reality and attempt to convert things to that, or use DS as an intermediary and setup things in something exported out of DazStudio to something else to render. I am not wanting to start a war or anything with this post just trying to figure out how to best move forward. Thoughts are appreciated.

3DL still works like it always did. Iray is an option, not a mandate. If it's a desktop, Nvidia GPUs are not hard to swap into a secondary PCI slot. If it's a laptop, you might be able to use one in an egpu enclosure.
CPU iray still works, just a lot slower.
THanks for the reply, my last experience with 3DL was before uber and I had moved over to Carrara for HDRI/GI/AO I woud imagine that it will be figuring out how things where done before Iray for HDRI / GI / AO.
I did think about the eGPU High Seirra has support for it, I just would have to save my nickles for a big for the enclosure and Card. Has 3DL Improved as I haven't seen muc done there since Iray came out and usually rendered in layers then put together in photoshop to get what was wanted. True I will have to do some experiments with the CPU Iray.
Hi Milo, welcome to the dark side
Yep, it seems like DAZ has completely forgotten about Carrara. IMHO, DS isn't really a replacement, but it makes using newer Daz content much easier. Too bad you don't have a GPU for Iray, I really enjoy it. There's not a lot of new stuff to improve 3Delight. But you might be interested in getting the new IBL Master to get better speed with 3Delight with HDRI. You might also want to look into some of the other 3Delight utilities that extend what is easily available in DS. Iray in CPU mode will be about the same speed (many say Iray is faster) as Lux/Reality, and you won't have to worry about a lot of shader conversion. For using 3Delight, you might want to check out this thread:

I've been using DS a lot more over the past few months, and for a lot of things it's great, but for others you will no doubt miss Carrara. Good Luck!!
3DL also has a standalone version which has all the features available, as I understand it. However, I think it's a command line interface, though you may find a 3rd party freebie somewhere, I dunno, haven't looked.
Most things can be accessed via scripting in DS. The free standalone 3Delight also comes with restriction of 8 threads (i.e. a 4 core hyperthreaded CPU), which may be fine for your purpose, but the version in DS doesn't have this restriction (I know of one user who renders in DS using 20 cores/40 threads). If there is a real need to access other features not available in DS, then you need to learn scripting in 3Dleight anyway (as you suggested, no real UI in the free version).
