iMac Pro with Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB and IRAY

Hello there.
I wanted to switch from my old Windows machine to a new more powerfull iMac Pro.
In it is a Radeon Pro Vega 64 16 GB but daz 4.10 does not show a GPU at photorealistic devices. Only the CPU.
Does this mean my 10'000$ mac can't do Iray scenes in daz3d? xD

  • Only nVidia GPUs can help with Iray rendering, AMD chips do not have the required features.

Keep in mind that it can do iRay, you just won't get the extra speed a GPU would give you.

  • If you've already invested in the iMac, you might look at an eGPU solution for rendering. It's relatively expensive, but you'll be able to use your Mac for other stuff as the card churns away at your render. Another possible solution is to pick up a 3D package that allows you to render with something that's not tied to nVidia cards. Which is admitedly also annoying and costs more money. I love my Mac and would only buy a Windows computer reluctantly, but having two solutions with a high degree of hardware lock-in (MacOS and Iray) sucks.

Another solution would be to put a windows box with Iray Server on your network, stuff it with nVidia Quadros and get full DS/Iray functionality on the iMAC that way.

edited to add, you also get the benefit of putting renders in a queue.

  • Personally, I'm moving to software that has embraces GPU solutions for all platforms (e.g. MAXON Cinema 4D).  I've given up on Daz and Poser in this regard.  Neither tap into OpenCL or any other GPU-agnostic framework.  And for the foreseeable future, I do not see Apple using nVidia cards in their pro-level Macs.

While other packages are costly, time is also money.  So the time savings will ultimately pay for those packages over the long run.
