I think the minimum card size is 4GM
But you can still use iray in CPU mode
2GB would be tight, espeically for characters using a lot of maps. I used to be able to get one in my 1GB card (with not hair, clothes, or environment) as long as it had relatively few maps per surface. Resizing maps may help, but I would certainly aim for a minimum of 4GB on your card if possible.
I agree that's a tight card indeed. That said, if you scale down the textures and simplify materials then it may fit. But you also loose quality. And you will be limited with the rendering resolution since Iray allocates the frame buffer and working space accordingly. A trick to fit the vram is also to render the characters and the scene plate separately. Then paste them together with GIMP or Photoshop.
By following the above advices I was able to render hd-ready images with just 1 gb of vram. I also used the intel hd for the viewport so to leave the card free for rendering.
