Hairblending OOT hair

I have a question for OOT's hairblending system. How does it work? I use this hair, choose a base color and under the tab surfaces I choose the ON button, the strength,style and color. After rendering I saw only the base color. How do I use the hairblending?  I can't find any description how to use. Perhaps somebody can help step by step? Thanks.

In every OOT product download is a PDF included. Last week I found one in my library, followed the instructions and hey - it works. Some alterings of color gradients are very subtle. Unfortunately my DAZ crashes every time I manipulate too much :(
