Smoothing Modifier - Select Items

Okay. The smoothing modifier is an invaluable asset when it comes to clothing. There's no doubt about that.
However...is there a way to only apply it to parts of a given outfit?
Say, for example, I want to have the fabric smooth, but I don't want to smooth the buttons or something else. Is there a way to only smooth part of that outfit?

it would be nice to be able to weight map it, and I have a feature request in for that (which doesn't stop you doing the same, though features are not necessarily assessed by number of requests). At the moment it isn't possible, and it may conceivably be that the algorithm wouldn't support partial smoothing.
