Can't select item in viewport

About 2 hours ago DAZ Studio took a giant dump and my CMS went nuts. I lost quite a bit of metadata, which I can handle. The bad thing is that a product I am working now is not selectable when you click on it in the viewport. It doesn't even come up when right clicking. You can, however, select the materials on it with the Material Selection Tool. You can also select it in the scene tab.

Now I know what you're thinking... is Selectable "on" in the parameters tab? Yes, it is. I even tried turning it off and on again, but no selection. Other items in the scene are selectable in the viewport, but not this. Nothing in the item is locked, UV's show up, materials, everything works except selectability. I am tempted to try to edit the .dsf file, but I don't want to mess up my week's worth of work.

Any ideas?

Have you tried switching to a different layout and then switch it back again?

Eh, that didn't work. I was hoping...

This is probably something you have thought of already, but figure it can't hurt to ask... I have ntoiced that sometimes when I am working with a few different items in the same viewport. Some of them seem to be bigger than the eye see, and in a sense covers the object I am trying to select. making it impossible to select that one. Cule it pehraps be something like that?

No, unfortunately. It's a problem even if it's the only item in the scene. Right now I am trying to transfer its morphs to another instance of the item. So far, it's working, but I have over 260 morphs. Might have to start over if I can't figure it out. Thanks for trying... :)

I know you've probably tried this already but standard IT response...have you tried turning it off and on? :)

I'm guessing, you've done so with the CM issue but have you restarted your computer and not just Daz?

What about forcing the CM to reload the database?

Truthfully, I have no idea what could cause something like this so I'm grasping at straws.

I appreciate your answer, but I've done all of those things. I even reinstalled DAZ Studio. I even reset my database. Turned CM off, then back on. Restarted PC. Re-Imported Metadata. It just doesn't want to grab the darn thing. I have exported an .obj of the item and then reimported the .obj, which works as it should so it's not the geometry. I tried comparing both copies to see if some mystery setting was turned off, but I can't find anything. I think I just have to transfer the morphs I can to the new object then re-do all of the FMB's and FHM's and such. Hopefully that won't be too long (found a shortcut).

Is it a TriAx figure? If so, the bones need to have groups associated with them in order to be selectable ion the viewport.

That's the answer. You are brilliant, Richard. There are no groups associated with any of the bones. Now, I just have to figure out how to put the groups back in. They were there once. I'm not sure how I lost them. I think it might have happened when I was trying to add a UV set, which came back as an error. Oh, did I mention I also can't seem to assign new UV's?

Thank you so much. I figured I had clicked some random thing somewhere wrong or Studio had a brain-cramp moment.  A few months ago, it spontaneously happened while I was adding weight mapping to the bones or trying to get things to bend smoothly, and this time I didn't even get that far.

Granted, my rigging ambitions are not all that spectacular, tho it was something to try out, lol.  I had simply thrown it all out and a few months later tried again from scratch.  After having made a few more complex things here and there, I will sympathies with Slosh regarding the desire to keep the past few days or so of work put into something when something goes wrong at step four hundred and sixty two thousand.

This is a good bread crumb to keep around.  Thank you.

    (EDIT)

I don't know if it applies to other bone configurations or not.  I did not need to fix this on every single bone in the rig, Only the "hip" root bone needed this fixed, and the cube became selectable again.  As shown in my attached screen-cap.

  • I'm having the same issue, except it's third party content I downloaded.  Some of it has bones, which do work, but you can't select the min the viewport.  I've been up and down the Dazzy parts of the internet and that joint editor window where you set one bone as a default, or even a palce where you can reorder bones that already exist, is eluding me.  Anybody have a quick answer of where to go to do that in 4.9 for an item that seems to have all the bones in the right place with the right targets, but don't seem to have any hiearchy and you still can't select it in the viewport?  Thanks ahead of time.

This is an old thread but I just would like to thank you for providing this info!

I made a cloth, then added a new material zone, updated the geometry and my cloth was not selectable anymore.
I could never guess what was the problem if I hadn't found this thread.
    Thank you once again :)
