... not too original i guess. but then, there is only seven plots to pick from - read that somewhere. ...

Joseph Campbell - The Power of Myth... or Monomyth... or something. Anyway, he's the guy who collapsed 5000 years of story-telling / art into a "been there seen that" moment (>_<).</div>

Seven templates to pick from maybe? If there was only seven plots people would have stopped writing books, doing movies, and making games years ago. How one elaborates on those templates and make them unique is what makes things more original (Even if it's done a tad poorly - originality does not always mean superiority ^^)

Templates - yes. The specifics change, of course.

Ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories aren't going to be talking about the "hero picking up his mobile phone to dial the {powers-that-be} to tell them the {bad-guys} are about to smash the {location}", are they? X). But they may describe the Lone Hero struggling against Incredible Odds, to bring {something-valuable} to the {lesser-mortals}.

    another list of seven :)

    seven planets?

scifi tropes - ice planet. my story doesn't have an ice planet. Lexx didn't have an ice planet, so i guess it's okay.

The ultimate list of seven: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_seven_references_in_Halo

Ice Planet? You mean Ice Moons like Europa? :3
*Edit* Waaaiiiit... Was it Europa that was icy or Io? One of them is volcanic, the other is icy with a presumed liquid ocean beneath it ??? *End edit*

I think that icy planets are so overrated though. There needs to be more gas giants like Jupiter (Love those storms) and Neptune.

Visual art from pre-literate cultures that predates 800 BCE can be included here, though it's important to be very careful interpreting just what tropes it represents. "...machinery claims are made to the so called ideas in almost every film, and not infrequently they are backed up by suits for heavy damages. Inasmuch as these ideas, in the main, descend to us from Neanderthal man, it is often quite impossible for a given movie author to prove that he invented what he is accused of having stolen. So he must hunt for it in the literature of the past, and thus prove that, if he lifted it himself, so also did the man claiming it. Defending such suits has familiarized the solicitors of the movie folk with all the popular literature back to the earliest written records."

i'm seeing some names from FinalFantasy like Tiamat, under Olderthandirt. i'm only up to Cs

That would be because Tiamat predates Final Fantasy by centuries. Tiamat was a primordial God in Babylonian creation myth, and was commonly depicted as a dragon. She created Marduk (Often depicted as a cow I believe) and a number of others, but considered them to be too noisy and set out to kill them. The other gods sent Marduk to deal with Tiamat and her husband, and after slaying her Marduk used her remains to create the universe, the sky, and the Earth.

Bahamut I believe was from a completely different civilization's myths, completely unrelated to Tiamat or her myth of origin and IIRC was just a demon.

Similarly, Leviathan was from a different culture's myths and was - like bahamut - "just a demon". Though to a lesser extent I think? I dunno. The name means "Twisted Creature"

All three are truly ancient, both in terms of their "Myth of Origin" where they were created, as well as their age(s) in said myths. So yeah. Older then Dirt indeed :)

*EDIT* Bahamut apparently originated in Arabian myth, and his (its?) name meant "Behemoth" in Arabian.

"The Biblical notion of the behemoth was that of a large hippopotomus, but the Arabs revised this slightly and ended up with a large fish-like creature with wings. The myth goes that seven seas could fit within its girth. It is also said that its eye can shine a very bright light which normal humans cannot see."

So much for being the "king of dragons' XD

I don't know all the historical and technical basis for this, but I used to tell my best friend all the time that there are only a handful of basic stories. What makes them different is place and time. What sometimes makes them better, or even exceptional, is how the story is told.

He began to figure out what I was saying. We would watch TV shows or movies, first run never before seen by me, and I'd recite dialog moments before it was spoken by the characters. He'd get upset, or frustrated, and would ask, "How do you do that?" I often knew "who did it" right near the beginning of the program/movie. Sometimes he'd get mad at me for ruining it. I had to keep it to myself sometimes. "You saw this already!" "No, it's first run!" "How do you do that?" "It's not hard, there are only a few stories...it's just how they're told." I like to see how it's told, and enjoy the adventure.

Unfortunately, I lost my best friend last year, unexpectedly.

Sorry to hear that Dana (v_v)...

... how do you find that skill affects your _own_ storytelling/art?

Does it dampen/depress your creative instincts, or do you see it as a challenge to "surprise yourself"?

I'm not much of a story teller, actually. I've written a few short things, but nothing that is published or anything like that. Actually, every time I think of something it's not really that original, or that's how I think of it. I did have a Writing from Experience class when I was working on my Associates degree. I enjoyed it.

Blech - neck hurts this morning from slumping over the laptop last night watching "Hansel and Gretel, Witch Hunters". Interesting movie, though!

Back to work today, quiet so far. Cold pizza and coffee for breakfast, lemon pepper chicken wings for lunch! Yum!

Tonight I'm going to attack the Shader Mixer and see if I can add some turbulence to my water plane. I also need a sandy bottom to put underneath it all, I might have something that will do, though.. or a submerged mountain range.

Need more sleep.. early to bed tonight if possible. No real complaints.

so i was plyaing some MMORPGs on my single core computer. i know, i know. my computer is seven years old. lol. i check to see how much Video RAM the games too. some use 250 - 400 MB. i was playing on low quality settings too. i guess some games use the VRAM as a cache for textures and objects like Daz Studio and Vue.

in case you are wondering, one of the games did crash 10 seconds after the world loaded. lol. i guess my six year old video card is too weak for this particular game.
