Have you ever tried shaping a 3D character out of a 2D image? I did.

I just tried it out, the result was unexpected, but I also didn't imagined the character any different, it is a character I made myself, original. (The hair is not important)

have you ever done this "conversion" before, how did it turned out?

If I update the model, I will try to make the nose more "triangular", as it is on the 2D depiction.

Yes, I've. It's one of basic steps to learn modelling.

For me, I used a nude model photo.

This method is also used to bring anime characters into 3D.

What would you say that are the essentials to make this? having a lot of reference from various angles?

You need ideally 4 photos from all sides: Front, back, left side, right side. There are sites that sell these photos. It CAN be done with just front and side photos though.

It teaches you basic topology in modelling. Proper humanoid topology requires a fair amount of practicing to get used to. It isn't about shaping a cube to a shape of human. Topology matters if you plan to rig it and let it bend realistically.

    Google "human topology guide"

Lots of modelling uses this method in some way.

I model cars, using blueprints, photo references and my own poor concept art if im not modelling something pre-existing.

It's nearly impossible (for me at least) to arrive at a finished result without some guides on the desired outcome.

Although I might 'doodle' in 3D on occasions, once that is done i set something out in 2D.

I would agree that nude references for 3D figures are important; 3D.SK is a good source for those.

Interesting! Did you also made the car on your avatar? it looks very realistic. I use apps with built in shapes to create sketches, as I am not good at all at drawing human faces, so I only end up with the front view of a face, the rest is up to my imagination. I am very happy with the results. Is there somewhere I can see more of your models?

Yes. I did it in Blender, few years ago now.

I have a couple of images posted on Deviant Art, of models I've done; I modelled the Aston Martin I show on YouTube.

Not done any since University (I'm a mature student), as not had time, nor have I since graduated; new job. :)
