edited December 1969 in The Commons

I was wondering what program and if there are any tutorials on how to make clothes from scratch. I want a 1940's style clothes and can't find what I am looking so need to design my own.

Thanks for any help

If you want to start creating clothing for your characters, you'll need to learn how to use a modeling program such as Blender or Hexagon. Luckily, for Genesis there's an automatic conversion tool in Daz Studio which makes it very easy to take your outfit and fit it to a character.

The basic guide goes like this:

    1) You'll need to disable any subdivision options on the figure and then export it.
    2) Open the OBJ in your modeler of choice.
    3) Model the outfit, using the figure as a guide.
    4) Delete the figure once it's no longer needed.
    5) UV map the outfit (gets it ready to accept textures)
    6) Export the outfit to an OBJ
    7) Import the outfit into Daz Studio and fit it to Genesis using the Transfer Utility.

Learning how to model is a new topic all of it's own though, as there's a lot to pick up on and it really depends heavily on what software you're using to create the outfit.

A step is missing. You need to assign material sections to the outfit...in many cases, but not all. Doing this will allow you to seperate the sections for the uv map to better texture the outfit. Also, in order to have a uvmap, you need to cut and flatten the various parts first.

I intentionally left that one to avoid confusion. It's not necessary to assign material zones, though it is desirable to do so. Material zones give you more power over customizing the end results, but if you're simply creating a one-off outfit, then it's not required.

Also, flattening the outfit to UV map it is an archaic technique which no longer applies in modern day modeling applications. Aside from programs which allow you to 'paint' UV's onto your projects, you can simply add seams to any section of a model and map it as a 3-Dimensional object dragging vertices and faces around as needed. It's a lot faster to work this way, and in my opinion results in a much more organic flow between faces.

It's too bad there are not more updated tutorials to follow. I was going off of one's that are at least five years old. Now if you have a solution to Hexagon crashing everytime I try to use it, you will be my new hero...lol

Hexagon http://www.daz3d.com/products/hexagon/hexagon-what-is-hexagon is an awesome, inexpensive modelling program and this tutorial http://www.daz3d.com/classic-bikini is amazing It will not only teach you to make clothes, it will teach you step by step how to use hexagon. I found it an excellent tutorial.

I have started a little dress tut in my thread with a 1940s dress. There are some interesting websites for reference images. Feel free to drop by and pose any questions you may have. If not myself, hopefully somebody will have some answers.
